LAWRENCE, Kansas, February 5. KANSAS swimming and diving won seven-of-eight Saturday and 15-of-16 overall in the two-day event, defeating Big 12 opponent Iowa State, 195-99, at Robinson Natatorium. The Jayhawks improved to 10-5 in dual competition and 2-1 against the Big 12.<\/p>\n
This was the annual senior meet, KU's final home dual meet of the season, honoring the accomplishments of the senior class (Joy Bunting, Iuliia Kuzhil, Amanda Maez, Alyssa Potter and Brittany Potter).<\/p>\n
"I've been coaching for 18 years and this is one of the best senior classes I've ever had the pleasure of working with," Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. "All five of them brought something unique to the program to make it a lot better. They are going to be sorely missed and we'll never replace a class like this one. It's going to be a class that we measure future classes against."<\/p>\n
Bunting and Kuzhil both won events on the final day of dual competition. Bunting, a senior from Greeley, Colo., took first in the 300-yard IM (3:15.00) and Kuzhil, a senior from Cherkasy, Ukraine, was crowned champion of the 150-yard backstroke (1:27.61).<\/p>\n
On the diving side, sophomore Christy Cash took the top spot in the one-meter dive with a score of 257.17.<\/p>\n
Other winners included sophomore Monica Johannessen, who placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.25), freshman Alison Lusk, who won the 150-yard breaststroke (1:42.74), junior Shannon Garlie, who took first in the 400-yard freestyle (3:57.06) and junior Abigail Anderson, who won the 50-yard butterfly (25.93).<\/p>\n
The Jayhawks will return to action when they travel to Austin, Texas for the Big 12 Championships Feb. 23-26.<\/p>\n
