{"id":201888,"date":"2016-05-13T13:53:25","date_gmt":"2016-05-13T20:53:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=201888"},"modified":"2016-05-14T05:48:23","modified_gmt":"2016-05-14T12:48:23","slug":"kirsty-coventry-among-athletes-calling-wada-to-take-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kirsty-coventry-among-athletes-calling-wada-to-take-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Kirsty Coventry Among Athletes Calling WADA To Take Action Against Doping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just one day after\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/13\/sports\/russia-doping-sochi-olympics-2014.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur&amp;_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>released their explosive story about\u00a0<strong>Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov<\/strong>, the former director of the national anti-doping laboratory in Moscow who oversaw systematic doping and the sabotage of drug testing in Russian athletes, many are now calling for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/13\/sports\/russias-doping-problem-is-an-open-secret-no-longer.html?ref=sports&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">Russia to be banned from the Rio Games<\/a> altogether.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the call to ban Russia, many professional athletes are speaking up and urging\u00a0committees such as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Olympic Committ (IOC) to step up and be more aggressive in ensuring that all athletes are clean and participating on a level playing field.<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe\u00a0Olympic medalist\u00a0<strong>Kirsty Coventry, <\/strong>who\u00a0serves as an athlete representative for both WADA and the IOC, <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/olympics\/story\/_\/id\/15529416\/wada-meetings-sport-anti-doping-movement-survive-latest-allegations\" target=\"_blank\">delivered some harsh words<\/a> to Thursday&#8217;s WADA Foundation Board meeting through Paralympic sledge hockey champion\u00a0<strong>Todd Nicholson<\/strong>. In her statement she proclaimed,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">I have no confidence that I will be competing on a level playing field in Rio. We [WADA] market and portray ourselves as te &#8216;Organization for Clean Sport&#8217; and &#8216;Protecting Clean Athletes&#8217; but we are not&#8230;.We either need to get full autonomy and independence to take actions, or we need to stop marketing ourselves as the organization that will get things done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Coventry isn&#8217;t the only athlete (or swimmer!) speaking up. Along with her message for WADA were messages from several U.S. Olympic swimmers, including\u00a0<strong>Cammile Adams, Jimmy Feigen<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Anthony Ervin.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adams, a butterfly specialist, expressed that she &#8220;personnally feel[s] that WADA has let down every clean athlete in sport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Feigen, a 400 freestyle relay silver medalist, added, &#8220;I have continued to place a lot of hope in the many opportunities for WADA to step in and clean up the system.
