Three swimmers have been awarded the $7,500 prize this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephanie Hein\u00a0<\/strong>of Illinois is the only woman. She is joined by\u00a0<strong>Curtis Goss\u00a0<\/strong>of Indiana and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/iowas-charles-holliday-honored-with-leadership-award\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Holliday<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>of Iowa.<\/p>\n<h3>Full Press Release from the Big Ten:<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><strong>ROSEMONT, Ill. \u2013<\/strong> The Big Ten Conference office announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_465175640\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Thursday<\/span><\/span>. Two students competing in intercollegiate athletics from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program were each awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based on primarily academic achievements.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s recipients span 20 different sports and will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines, including aerospace engineering, astrophysics, biochemistry, economics, forensics, genetics, medicine, public health administration, physiology and psychology.<\/p>\n<p>All of this year\u2019s recipients have been named Academic All-Conference at least once in their career, while two have been tabbed Academic All-Americans \u2013 Michigan\u2019s <strong>Mason Ferlic<\/strong> and Nebraska\u2019s <strong>Levi Gipson<\/strong>. Four honorees helped lead their teams to Big Ten Championships this season, including Michigan\u2019s Ferlic (men\u2019s cross country), Michigan State\u2019s <strong>Colby Wollenman<\/strong> (men\u2019s basketball tournament), Nebraska\u2019s Gipson (men\u2019s indoor track and field) and Ohio State\u2019s <strong>Christopher Diaz<\/strong> (men\u2019s tennis).<\/p>\n<p>Maryland\u2019s <strong>Emily VandeWater<\/strong>, Minnesota\u2019s <strong>Jonathan Christenson<\/strong>, Rutgers\u2019 <strong>Maggie Morash<\/strong> and Wisconsin\u2019s <strong>Adam Lauko<\/strong> have been named Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honorees in their respective sports so far this academic year, while Illinois\u2019 <strong>Mason Monheim<\/strong>, Michigan\u2019s Ferlic and <strong>Shannon Scavelli<\/strong>, Ohio State\u2019s Diaz, Rutgers\u2019 <strong>Zack Sikora<\/strong> and Wisconsin\u2019s <strong>Lauren Chypyha<\/strong> have earned All-Conference honors this season. Ferlic, Scavelli and Iowa\u2019s <strong>Kathryne Brown<\/strong> have been named Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients with five schools yet to announce their honorees.<\/p>\n<p>Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student\u2019s postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books.
