FAIRFAX, Va., Dec. 2. THE Washington State University women\u2019s swim team widened its lead to 230 points after day two of the three-day Patriot Invitational at George Mason University Saturday.<\/p>\n
Cougar swimmers recorded wins in three out of the six events held Saturday, for a total score of 663 points. Ohio University holds second place with 433, and Boston College is in third with 322.<\/p>\n
Taryn Ternent, a freshman from Edenvale, South Africa, has played a part in four Cougar wins during the meet. Ternent won the 100 backstroke in a time of
\n57.25 seconds, the third fastest time in WSU school history. She also led the 200 medley relay team, along with Andree-Anne LeRoy (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada), Christina Swanson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), and Lindsay Henahan(Rochester, N.Y.), to victory. In addition, Ternent won the 50 freestyle and helped lead the 200 freestyle relay team to victory yesterday. <\/p>\n
In the 100 butterfly, WSU\u2019s swimmers placed in five of the top seven spots. Sophomore Lindsay Henahan won the event in a time of 56.58 seconds. Rachel Dong (Paramount, Calif.) placed third, Rachelle Carano (Reno, Nev.) fourth, Melissa Hubley (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) sixth, and Taryn Ternent seventh. <\/p>\n
Cougars grabbed four of the top five places in the 100 backstroke. In addition to the winner, Ternent, Andree-Anne LeRoy placed third, Katie Byrnes (Fort
\nLauderdale, Fla.) fourth, Theresa Dunn (Morgan Hills, Calif.) fifth, Tatiana Maristany (Mexico City, Mexico) eighth, and Sasha Taylor (Smiths Falls,Ontario, Canada) ninth.<\/p>\n
"We are happy with the way the team is performing together," said Suzanne Yee,WSU assistant swim coach. "Each swimmer is contributing to the effort, as
\nevidenced by the strong performances in both of the relay events tonight. The team is using the meet as perspective on how they look compared to the rest of
\nthe nation. We are looking to establish ourselves as a team with a legitimate top-25 ranking."<\/p>\n
The Patriot Invitational will conclude Sunday, with preliminary heats beginning at 10 a.m. EST and finals at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
