{"id":200923,"date":"2016-05-09T20:13:26","date_gmt":"2016-05-10T03:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=200923"},"modified":"2016-05-10T05:39:02","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T12:39:02","slug":"german-women-lose-chance-at-400-free-relay-in-rio-after-coachs-critique","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/german-women-lose-chance-at-400-free-relay-in-rio-after-coachs-critique\/","title":{"rendered":"German Women Lose Chance at 400 Free Relay in Rio After Coach&#8217;s Critique"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The German women will not have another chance to qualify a 400 freestyle relay for the Rio Olympic Games, according to National Team coach\u00a0<strong>Henning Lambertz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan last summer the German quartet\u00a0did not qualify for the Games.\u00a0Last week, at the German National Championships, the first step in Germany&#8217;s multiple part Olympic qualification process, the relay came up short of the necessary times again.<\/p>\n<p>Lembertz told German media, &#8220;Compared with the world&#8217;s top (swimmers), our girls look like thin models, not athletes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nineteen year old <strong>Anna Dietterle<\/strong> defended herself, and the country&#8217;s other top sprinting potential, saying, &#8220;I think its unfair to compare out figures with the world&#8217;s best, most of whom are five or six years older and at the peak of their careers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dietterle, who, was the second fastest woman in the 100 last week, also said she has put in more time in the weight room this year.<\/p>\n<p>According to Lembertz, &#8220;They couldn&#8217;t swim the times, they clearly lacked the power.&#8221; The team will not be allowed another chance to qualify at next week&#8217;s European Championships.<\/p>\n<p>In Kazan,<strong> Annika Bruhn<\/strong>, <strong>Dorthea Brandt<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alexandra Nathalie Wenk<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Marlene Huther\u00a0<\/strong>swam the relay which finished 13th, failing to make finals.\u00a0At last week&#8217;s German Nationals, Bruhn posted a 54.85, nearly a half second faster than her 55.34 lead off last summer.
