U.S. OLYMPIC champions Megan Quann and Ed Moses completed sweeps of the breaststroke events, winning the 200 meter distance tonight, the final night of the US Open Championships, held at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center at Auburn University. Quann took the women's event in 2:26.12, while Moses won the men's in 2:11.22. On the previous two nights, both won the 50 and 100 meter breaststroke.<\/p>\n
Eighteen year-old Robert Margalis of St. Petersburg, Fla., won his second title of the meet with a meet record in the 1500 meter freestyle. His 15:03.04 was more than eight seconds faster than Ricardo Monasterio in second place.<\/p>\n
France's Michel Picotte blazed a win in the 100m free, clocking a meet record 48.51, well ahead of South Africa's Herman Louw. Picotte won the 50 meters last night.<\/p>\n
The USA's Greg Reeves outlasted Honza Vitazka of the Czech Republic to take the 200 fly 1:58.01 to 1:58.61.<\/p>\n
Jamaica's Janelle Atkinson, a freshman at the University of Florida, was the only female winner tonight who is not in high school. Atkinson, who finished fourth at the Sydney Olympics in the 400m free, earned her second US Open title tonight, charging from behind in the final 100 meters to overtake Magda Dyskiewicz and win the 800 meters freestyle in 8:29.33.<\/p>\n
Christina Swindle, who last month set US national high school records in the 50 and 100 freestyle, won the 100 meters tonight in 54.89, half a second ahead of Kim Vandenberg. Swindle won the 50 meters on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Jamie Reid, a teammate of Quann's in Puyallup, Washington, took the 200 meter butterfly in 2:10.21. Earlier she had won her specialty, the 200m backstroke.<\/p>\n
Megan Quann (Puyallup Swim Club) won the Phillips 66 Performance of the Meet award with her meet record 1:07.25 in the 100m breaststroke. <\/p>\n
Maggie Bowen (Auburn University) and Robert Margalis (University of Georgia) took women's and men's high point honors, respectively.<\/p>\n
