EVANSVILLE, Indiana, January 24. NO. 8 Indiana traveled south to in-state foe Evansville and came away with a 67-37 victory over the Purple Aces Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Indiana competed with a pared-down squad, giving most of its swimmers a rest. Kevin Happ, Justin Peterfish, Baser Al-Muhana and Sean Ransenberg took the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:34.64, while Mark Wetzel, Aaron Opell, Cody Weik and A.J. Miller finished second (1:35.02).<\/p>\n
Brendan Butler led a 1-2 IU finish in the 1000 free, coming home in 9:10.14, a season best. Steffan Troxel touched the wall in 9:12.42, 15 seconds faster than his previous top time this year. In the 200 free it was freshman John Schnittker winning in 1:43.21, and Andrew Taylor second (1:45.42).<\/p>\n
Cody Weik swam the 100 backstroke and won the event in 51.25. Happ placed second with a mark of 51.42. It was another Indiana victory in the 200 butterfly with Tony Mattar posting a season best of 1:49.32 for the win. Tim Blue was second in 1:50.36, followed by Jon Hueni in third (1:56.19). Christopher Head recorded a time of 1:57.62, while Al-Muhana finished in 1:58.75. In all Indiana had the top-five times in the race.<\/p>\n
Ransenberg was the 50 freestyle winner (21.23), with Wetzel's time second (21.36). Wetzel went on to win the 100 freestyle (47.18), and Ransenberg's time of 47.45 was second fastest. Schnittker raced to a time of 49.55. Happ won the 200 backstroke (1:51.85), with Peterfish second (2:06.23) and Opell third (2:08.97).<\/p>\n
Miller's time of 2:03.64 in the 200 breaststroke was three seconds faster than second-place finisher Peterfish (2:06.23). Indiana had the five fastest times in the 500 free, led by Mattar (4:31.27), Troxel (4:33.99) and Butler (4:34.20). Weik won the 100 butterfly in 49.89, while Miller picked up his second individual win of the day in the 200 individual medley (1:51.90). Happ was second (1:52.32) and Opell third (1:52.53).<\/p>\n
In an exhibition heat, Opell recorded a season best of 55.51 in the 100 breaststroke, while Justin Peterfish finished in 57.74. The day ended with the 400 freestyle relay as Mattar, Hueni, Taylor and Peterfish won in 3:10.81.<\/p>\n
The Hoosiers close out their regular season schedule on Feb. 7 as they travel to Purdue to take on their in-state rival. That will be Indiana's final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships, Feb. 26-28, in West Lafayette.<\/p>\n
