MADISON, Wisconsin, January 23. AFTER training and competing in Hawaii for nearly a month, the Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team brought the heat home Friday night in a 216-80 defeat of St. Olaf at the UW Natatorium.<\/p>\n
The Badgers started out the night winning the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:33.46 with a lineup of junior Derrick O'Donnell in the backstroke, junior Dan Koenig in the breaststroke, senior Kyle Sorensen in the butterfly, and junior Phil Davies in the freestyle.<\/p>\n
The "B" team came up second in the medley in a time of 1:35.35 with the team of sophomore Jessie Stipek at backstroke, sophomore Kyle Thompson in the breaststroke, junior Steven Wiesner in the butterfly, and sophomore Luke Lengfeld in the freestyle.<\/p>\n
The Badgers continued their winning ways in the individual events, starting with freshman Brett Nagle. Nagle started by winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:41.73. He later won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.34, and placed second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:53.57. While the freshman swam well in his return home, the Badger upperclassmen wanted to demonstrate their abilities as well.<\/p>\n
Senior Scott Rice and junior Derrick O'Donnell won the two events following the 1000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, in times of 1:43.08 and 50.48, respectively. Rice later went on to win the 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.30 and the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.91.<\/p>\n
O'Donnell also won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:53.57, and took second in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.87. Wisconsin senior Kyle Sorensen also helped the Badgers by winning the 50-yard freestyle in 20.84 and the 100-yard butterfly in 51.40.<\/p>\n
The Badger 200-yard freestyle relay teams finished the meet first and second, with the "A" relay of Davies, freshman Wes Lagerhausen, sophomore Connor Andrews, and Sorensen, taking first in a time of 1:24.54. The "B" relay of Lengfeld, freshman Cole Scarbrough, Nagle, and Rice finished at 1:26.38.<\/p>\n
The Badgers had a solid team showing in the swimming competition, winning all but the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke races. They also swept the first three spots in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles, the 200-yard backstroke, and the 100-yard butterfly.<\/p>\n
Wisconsin continued their success in the diving portion of the meet through sophomore Caleb Percevecz, who won both the 1-meter with a score of 312.98 and the 3-meter with a total of 309.45. Junior Al Morrison took second on the 3-meter board with a score of 297.15, and third in the 1-meter with a 267.00. Bryan Weinstein also captured second for the Badgers in the 1-meter competition with a score of 274.88.<\/p>\n
Both the Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday against UW-Green Bay at the UW Natatorium.<\/p>\n
