LOS ANGELES, California, January 23. IN a cold and rainy day at the outdoor USC McDonald's Swim Stadium, the No. 12 USC women's swimming team edged Washington, 130.5-129.5 while the No. 22 Trojan men fell to the Huskies, 141-212, on Friday (Jan. 23).<\/p>\n
In the women's meet, the competition came down to the final 400y free relay. In an unusual turn of events, both the USC and Washington 'A' teams were disqualified. Washington's 'B' team moved into first place and USC's 'B' team was second, which allowed for enough of a cushion for the Trojans to maintain their lead and win the meet.<\/p>\n
Washington had secured the win on the men's side by the final relay, but that didn't prevent USC's 400y free relay of sophomore Jake Grosser, freshman Jeff Daniels, sophomore Buddy Turner and junior Zoltan Povaszay from wrapping up the meet with a win in 3:01.19.<\/p>\n
USC's women's 200y medley squad of seniors Kristen Lahey, Rebecca Soni, Katy Houston and Rachael Waller opened the Friday competition with a second-place swim in 1:42.87. The men's relay of Grosser, seniors Kevin Bartell and Ankur Poseria and Turner won in 1:31.19.<\/p>\n
In the 1000y free, freshman Katinka Hosszu won in 10:01.90, coming from behind to win. In the men's 1000y free, Washington's Scott Spansail took control of the race early and won in 9:10.60. Sophomore Kevin Little was USC's top finisher in third (9:30.86).<\/p>\n
Waller fought off a charging Kelly Flynn (of Washington) to win the women's 200y free in 1:50.31, .09 ahead of Flynn. David Bai led a 1-2 finish for the Huskies in a tight men's race in 1:40.24. USC freshman Patrick White was third (1:40.50) while Povazsay was fourth (1:40.62).<\/p>\n
Lahey took second in the women's 100y back in 55.67 behind Washington's first-place Hannah Ross (55.04). Trojan senior Vanni Mangoni won the men's 100y back in 49.57, USC's fastest time in the event this season. Junior James Martin was third (52.13).<\/p>\n
Soni got a rare challenge in the 100y breast. She turned only slightly ahead of Washington's Genevieve Patterson after 50 yards, but slowly pulled away to win in 1:00.88. Patterson was second in 1:02.64 and Houston was third (1:03.03). Bartell took third in the men's 100y breast in a season-best 56.25.<\/p>\n
USC freshman Tanya Krisman won the 200y fly going away in 1:59.41 while sophomore teammate Ellie Doran turned in a nice final 50 to take third in 2:04.35. In the men's 200y fly, Andre Blyth of Washington took first (1:46.46) while freshman Josh Joiner led USC
\nfinishers in third (1:51.75).<\/p>\n
Lahey out-touched Washington's Lindsey Sharp to win the women's 50y free, 23.55 to 23.57. Troy's Sophie Gosper was fourth (24.78). In the men's 50y free, Washington's Evan Bernier took first (20.34) while USC's Daniels was second (20.75) and Grosser third (20.78).<\/p>\n
Washington's Kelly Flynn sneaked ahead of Waller at the wall in the 100y free, winning in 51.14 to Waller's 51.23. In the men's 100y free, Bernier won again in 45.02 while Grosser was second (45.62) and Daniels was fourth (46.23).<\/p>\n
Junior Dina Hegazy led USC in the women's 200y back in third (2:03.85). Mangoni won the men's 200y back in 1:46.97 with Martin in third (1:49.76).<\/p>\n
Soni won the 200y breast in 2:12.88 with Houston completing the USC 1-2 finish in 2:16.22. Freshman Ella Kidron was fourth (2:21.39). In the men's 200y breast, USC senior Kazu Miyahara took second in 2:05.26.<\/p>\n
The Trojan women dominated the 500y free with Hosszu winning in 4:54.02 and Doran taking second in 4:56.16. Krissy Forelli was fourth (4:59.73). Washington's Spansail won the 500y free (4:26.21) while Povaszay was second (4:31.37).<\/p>\n
Campbell took the 100y fly in 55.18 with Krisman closing fast for second, a hair behind in 55.21. Lahey was fourth (56.52). Poseria was second in the men's 100y fly (49.47) to lead USC.<\/p>\n
In the women's 200y IM, Washington's Danielle Gong took first (2:01.18) while Hosszu was second (2:02.49) and Krisman was fourth (2:04.20). On the men's side, Mangoni (1:49.02) and Martin (1:53.46) posted a 1-2 finish. Mangoni's effort was a season-best.<\/p>\n
The men's team will square off in a non-scoring meet against Washington on Saturday at noon. It is the final men's home meet of the season.<\/p>\n
