{"id":200515,"date":"2016-05-05T19:47:17","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T02:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=200515"},"modified":"2016-05-05T19:47:17","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T02:47:17","slug":"university-of-scranton-teams-reinstated-on-probation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-scranton-teams-reinstated-on-probation\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Scranton Teams Reinstated, On Probation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Scranton men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving teams were reinstated, but will remain on probation, as of\u00a0Tuesday, according to the school&#8217;s student run newspaper,\u00a0<em>The Aquinas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>On February 10, the teams were suspended due to alleged violations of Title IX and &#8220;The University&#8217;s hazing, sexual harassment and sexual misconduct and alcohol policies.&#8221; Consequently, the team&#8217;s season ended abruptly, as the squad was not allowed to compete in the Landmark Conference Championship at the end of that week.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday night the team&#8217;s suspension was lifted, in a meeting where the swimmers and divers saw their coaches for the first time since February.<\/p>\n<p>In an email to the community on Wednesday, the University\u00a0announced the conclusion of its investigation, and said that, &#8220;In accordance with the Family Educational Rights &amp; Privacy Act (FERPA), the University cannot and will not discuss the status or outcomes of conduct cases for individual students.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The email also reported that in Tuesday&#8217;s meeting\u00a0Athletic Director\u00a0<strong>David Martin\u00a0<\/strong>discussed the investigation, along with &#8220;positive and safe ways for the teams to move forward that are consistent with the University&#8217;s Catholic and Jesuit values.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the team&#8217;s year long probation of the 2016-2017 season, they will participate in community service, including Special Olympics events and Relay for Life.<\/p>\n<p>In the past several weeks, some team members have received individual punishments, under other Title IX and hazing and alcohol policy investigations, according to the school paper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aquinas.scranton.edu\/2016\/05\/05\/swim-teams-reinstated\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read The Aquinas report here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Scranton men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving teams were reinstated, but will remain on probation, as of\u00a0Tuesday, according to the school&#8217;s student run newspaper,\u00a0The Aquinas.
