{"id":200395,"date":"2016-05-04T16:45:58","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T23:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=200395"},"modified":"2016-05-04T16:45:58","modified_gmt":"2016-05-04T23:45:58","slug":"iowas-charles-holliday-honored-with-leadership-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/iowas-charles-holliday-honored-with-leadership-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Iowa&#8217;s Charles Holliday Honored with Leadership Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>University of Iowa senior swimmer\u00a0<strong>Charles Holliday\u00a0<\/strong>was honored with a Student Leadership Award from the Center for Diversity and Enrichment.<\/p>\n<p>He was one of two student-athletes to receive the award.<\/p>\n<h3>Press release<\/h3>\n<p>IOWA CITY, Iowa<strong> &#8212;<\/strong> University of Iowa seniors Charles Holliday and <strong>MonTayla Holder<\/strong> have been named recipients of the Center for Diversity &amp; Enrichment\u2019s Student Leadership Award.<\/p>\n<p>The awards recognize individuals who have made meaningful and significant contributions to the University of Iowa or surrounding communities through their vision and action, sense of responsibility, devotion, and diligence; and through their inspiration, good judgement, and will.<\/p>\n<p>Holliday, a member of the UI men\u2019s swimming and diving program, led the Hawkeyes in the 50-yard freestyle as a senior in 2015-16.\u00a0 He swam an NCAA \u201cB\u201d qualifying time of 19.97 seconds at the 2016 Big Ten Championships, the eighth-fastest time in program history.<\/p>\n<p>The Rock Island, Illinois, native will receive his bachelor\u2019s degree in human physiology this month.\u00a0 Holliday has conducted microbiology research funded by NASA, was on the Dean\u2019s List for six semesters, and was also a President\u2019s List honoree.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, Holliday will join the Black Medical Association, where he will mentor young minorities and advocate for diversity and health equity in medicine.\u00a0 Holliday was a semifinalist for the Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar Award, for which there were more than 1,000 nominations.<\/p>\n<p>Holder, a senior on the UI track and field team, earned second-team All-America honors at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships as a member of the 1,600-meter relay. It was her second All-America recognition, as she was a second-team All-American in 2014 on the 400-meter relay.<\/p>\n<p>The Indianapolis native will receive her bachelor of science degree in sport and recreation management and entrepreneurship this month.\u00a0 Holder is a member of the Student-Athlete Academic Services Minority Focus Group Advisory Committee, the Presidential Committee on Athletics Well-Being Committee, and coordinator of ISAAC\u2019s video rendition of Martin Luther King\u2019s \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech,<\/p>\n<p>Holliday and Holder will be honored for their achievements at the CDE graduation reception on <span data-term=\"goog_49156055\">May 12<\/span> in the Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge.<\/p>\n<p><em>Courtesy of University of Iowa Athletics.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of Iowa senior swimmer\u00a0Charles Holliday\u00a0was honored with a Student Leadership Award from the Center for Diversity and Enrichment.
