﻿{"id":199548,"date":"2016-04-28T11:00:03","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T18:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=199548"},"modified":"2016-04-28T11:00:03","modified_gmt":"2016-04-28T18:00:03","slug":"marist-names-5-new-team-captains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/marist-names-5-new-team-captains\/","title":{"rendered":"Marist Names 5 New Team Captains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>POUGHKEEPSIE, New York\u00a0&#8211; The Marist swimming and diving program held its end of the year team banquet April 24, announcing the women\u2019s and men\u2019s captains for the 2016-17 campaign and handing out team awards from this past season.<\/p>\n<p>Current juniors\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=208772462&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Mosca<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=208772464&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Meredith Wurtz<\/a>\u00a0were selected as women\u2019s captains by their teammates. Mosca placed second in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships with a time of 2:09.11. She won the same event in three regular season meets and competed in the 200-yard butterfly and the 200- and 400-yard individual medley at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Wurtz was this year\u2019s MAAC Women\u2019s Swimmer of the Meet after breaking four school records and winning three individual events: the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle. She also anchored four relay squads that took home gold medals. The 800-yard freestyle relay\u2019s finish of 7:29.41 and the 400-yard medley relay team\u2019s mark of 3:47.35 set new Marist records. Wurtz also led off for the school record holding 200-yard freestyle relay squad in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, current sophomores\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=209537980&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Gallino<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=210307723&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Robert McDowell<\/a>\u00a0and junior\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=208771862&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Darcy<\/a>\u00a0will lead the Red Foxes as captains after a team vote. Gallino was named ECAC Diver of the Meet after finishing second on the 1- (279.50 points) and 3-meter (292.95 points) boards at the regional championship. He placed in the top five at three meters at the MAAC Championships. McDowell was Marist\u2019s top finisher in the backstroke at the MAAC Championships, placing second in the 100-yard event (50.81 seconds) and third at 200 yards (1:50.64). He led off for the 200- and 400-yard medley relay squads. Darcy placed third in the 100-yard breastroke at the MAAC Championships, clocking in at 1:02.56. He competed in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke at the ECAC Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Marist handed out Freshmen and Team MVP honors. Recipients of these awards were chosen through a point scale from regular season and postseason meets combined.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=210137817&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren Katz<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=210163893&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Knoll<\/a>\u00a0were recognized as the top performers after their first year on campus. Katz placed second in the 1-meter dive by 0.45 points in the home finale against Seton Hall on<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_797738716\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Jan. 26<\/span><\/span>. She finished eighth in the same event at the ECAC Championships with 201.35 points. Knoll turned in second place finishes in the 50- (20.70 seconds) and 200-yard (1:42.13) freestyle at the MAAC Championships. He won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle in his collegiate debut at Canisius on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_797738717\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Oct. 16<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>There were two team MVPs for the women in Wurtz and sophomore\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=209523486&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Megan Berardelli<\/a>. Berardelli broke her own school record when she posted 311.63 points in the 3-meter dive against Southern Connecticut State on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_797738718\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Jan. 9<\/span><\/span>. The score qualified her for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Berardelli was named the Most Outstanding Diver at the MAAC Championships after placing second at one meter (254.00 points) and winning the 3-meter dive (296.95 points). Senior\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205701313&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Dodway<\/a>\u00a0was the men\u2019s MVP. Dodway placed second on both boards at the MAAC Championships but captured an ECAC title in the 3-meter dive with 314.80 points. He became the first Marist male diver to place first at the ECAC Championships since Brian Bolstad took the top spot on both boards in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The Coaches\u2019 Awards went to seniors\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205704749&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Bethany Powhida<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205704614&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Renata Diotalevi<\/a>\u00a0for the women. Powhida won the 100- (57.56 seconds) and 200-yard (2:02.62) backstroke events at the MAAC Championships. She was also a member of Marist\u2019s first place 400-yard freestyle relay squad. Diotalevi won gold on the 1-meter board with a score of 268.15 points at the MAAC championships. She was third in the same event at the ECAC Championships (250.35 points). Gallino earned the award for the men.<\/p>\n<p>The Marist swimming and diving program will graduate five seniors at the end of the academic year: Powhida, Diotalevi,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205704610&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Bridget Curley<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goredfoxes.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205704602&amp;DB_OEM_ID=27700\" target=\"_blank\">Alexandria Koukos<\/a>. Dodway is the lone member of the men\u2019s team\u2019s Class of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>With 976 points at the MAAC Championships, the Marist women\u2019s team took first place by a program record of 446 points. It was the most team points for the Red Foxes at the conference title meet since 2000.
