BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, January 9. AFTER a month break from competition, the Indiana women's swimming and diving team returned to collegiate with day one of a meet with Michigan, Illinois and Tennessee at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n
Tennessee currently leads the meet with 1023.5 points, followed by Indiana (925.5), Michigan (579) and Illinois (111).<\/p>\n
The meet follows the format of a championship event with the exception that there are no preliminary heats. The morning session began with the 200-yard freestyle relay as Indiana's A squad of Margaux Farrell, Kate Zubkova, Donna Smailis and Allison Kay recorded a time of 1:35.35, good for fourth. Abby Cooper, Kristin Cihoski, Brittany Strumbel and Sarah Stockwell finished in 1:36.77 for sixth overall. <\/p>\n
Amanda Smith battled Tennessee's Aleksa Akerfelds down to the wire and touched first in a time of 4:49.44. That is the seventh-fastest time this season. Freshman Brittany Strumbel was third (4:54.51), followed by Kay (4:54.83) in fourth, Amilee Smith in sixth (4:57.59) and Nikki White eighth (4:58.66). <\/p>\n
Zubkova was the top IU finisher in the 200-yard individual medley, coming home in 2:04.00. Smailis was sixth (2:04.10) with Ashley Jones right on her heels in seventh with a season-best time of 2:04.16.<\/p>\n
In the 50-yard freestyle it was Farrell leading the way for IU with a time of 24.02, good for 10th place. Farrell has seven of the 10 fastest times this season. Smailis touched the wall in 24.21 (13th), with Zubkova 17th in 24.43.<\/p>\n
The first session finished with the 400-yard medley relay as Zubkova, Stockwell, Smailis and Farrell took second in 3:43.12.<\/p>\n
The evening session began with the 200-medley relay as Indiana's A team of Zubkova, Stockwell, Smailis and Farrell placed second with a time of 1:43.21. The team of Ashley Jones, Cooper, Brittany Barwegen and Kay was seventh (1:48.07).<\/p>\n
Kay was victorious in the 400-yard individual medley with a mark of 4:19.43. She was followed in second by Jones (4:19.57), with Amilee Smith sixth (4:24.43-season best) and Strumbel seventh (4:26.85-season best). Katelyn Ishee also swam a season best of 4:48.14.<\/p>\n
Zubkova recorded another top-five finish with a third-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly (55.47). Smailis was fifth (55.89), followed by Barwegen in sixth (55.90). Ashley Kranz was just 1\/100th of a second off her personal best with a time of 1:00.06.<\/p>\n
Farrell was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle to lead the Hoosiers (1:51.01). Fellow freshman Strumbel was right behind in fifth (1:51.36), and Amanda Smith (8th- 1:52.56), White (9th- 1:53.21) and Kay (10th- 1:53.31) rounded out the top 10.<\/p>\n
Stockwell was second to touch the wall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.92. Cooper placed fifth (1:04.60), while Amilee Smith tied with Tennessee's Martina Moracikova for sixth in 1:04.86. Jacquie Ward went a season best with a time of 1:07.49.<\/p>\n
Surprising no one at the pool, Zubkova won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.98, her second-fastest time this season. Jones was sixth in 58.14, while Farrell swam a season best with a time of 58.29 to finish eighth.<\/p>\n
Competition concluded in the pool with the 800-yard freestyle relay. Farrell, Strumbel, Amanda Smith and White combined to finish second with a time of 7:25.26. The team of Zubkova, Kay, Smailis and Courey Schaefer were fourth (7:36.08).<\/p>\n
Indiana went 1-2-3 in the women's one-meter and three-meter diving competitions, led by All-American and 2008 Olympian Christina Loukas. Loukas was victorious in both events with 354.85 points on the three-meter and 322.60 on the one-meter. Feldman was second on the one-meter (324.65) and three-meter (324.65), followed by Gabby Agostino (one-meter: 269.10; three-meter: 296.40). Amy Korthauer was fourth on the three-meter (276.50) and eighth on the one-meter (240.10). Christina Kouklakis placed seventh on the one-meter (240.15) and eighth (245.60) on the three-meter. <\/p>\n
On the platform it was Korthauer taking top honors with 266.45 points, with Agostino third (233.20). Nicole Brehm finished seventh (193.75), followed by Kouklakis in 12th (179.65).<\/p>\n
The meet concludes Saturday morning with the final session beginning at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n
