{"id":199394,"date":"2016-04-27T10:27:14","date_gmt":"2016-04-27T17:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=199394"},"modified":"2016-07-28T05:34:36","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T12:34:36","slug":"gabrielle-faamausili-and-zac-reid-highlight-new-zealand-junior-panpac-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gabrielle-faamausili-and-zac-reid-highlight-new-zealand-junior-panpac-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Gabrielle Fa\u2019amausili and Zac Reid Highlight New Zealand Junior PanPac Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>World Junior backstroke champion and former record holder <strong>Gabrielle Fa\u2019amausili<\/strong> heads a\u00a010-member New Zealand team to contest the Junior Pan Pacific championships in Maui,\u00a0Hawaii in August.<\/p>\n<p>Backstroker <strong>Bobbi Gichard<\/strong>, 16, who competed at last year\u2019s World champs, is also in the\u00a0team.<\/p>\n<p>Fa\u2019amausili won all six of her events at the National Age grade championships last week in\u00a0Wellington. She was just 0.03 off her New Zealand 16 years age group record in the 50m\u00a0freestyle, clocking 25.65s, but set a NAG record in the 100m backstroke with 1:00.76.<\/p>\n<p>She also clocked 2:15.56 to take three seconds off her personal best in the 200m backstroke.\u00a0All three were Panpac times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was awesome; it feels so unusual to actually do well in that (200) event,\u201d Fa\u2019amausili\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m super happy with that &#8211; I\u2019ve been working towards swimming smarter and swimming\u00a0longer distances to improve my 100m so I\u2019m really happy with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mya Rasmussen<\/strong>, 15, also qualified in the 400m IM, in 4:50.42. She has gone faster, winning\u00a0the event at last month\u2019s Australian Age group champs in a NAG time of 4:46.87, the fastest\u00a0time in the pool, and, at the time, the 47th fastest time this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m feeling really happy after Australia so was just aiming to do those times again here or\u00a0better them,\u201d Rasmussen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve wanted to do this for a while so to do it is really exciting and a big relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zac Reid<\/strong> reached the qualifying standard in the 1500m by just 0.6 sec, after a blistering last\u00a0leg to clock 15:58.28, He also qualified for the 400m freestyle in the heats, clocking 4:01.58,\u00a0but was edged out by <strong>Lewis Clareburt<\/strong>, also 16, who clocked 4:01.89 \u2013 an eight second\u00a0personal best &#8211; to qualify for Maui.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty knackered, it was a hard swim this morning and then Lewis really took it\u00a0tonight,\u201d Reid said. \u201cI just couldn\u2019t hold on I was a bit dead, but I\u2019m real happy about this\u00a0morning and real stoked to get the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others to qualify included Annabelle Paterson, 17, who bettered the qualifying standard in\u00a0the 200m backstroke event twice. <strong>Hayley McIntosh<\/strong> qualified in the 400m freestyle, and the\u00a0800m freestyle in 8:56.72, after a silver at the Australian Age grades. <strong>Caitlin Deans<\/strong>, 16, came\u00a0within a fingernail, clocking 9:00.48. The qualifying time is 9:00.41.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chelsey Edwards<\/strong>, 14, also came within a whisker in the 100m freestyle, with 57.61, just\u00a0outside a NAG record and 0.30s short of the Panpacs time.
