BOSTON, Massachusetts, January 3. HOST Harvard (5-0) won 11 of the 16 events contested en route to posting a 188-112 dual-meet victory over the Navy men's swimming team (12-1) at Blodgett Pool on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n
For the Mids, who were competing for the first time since posting a 159-111 victory over Maryland three weeks ago in Annapolis, the setback is their first of the 2008-09 campaign, snapping a 12-meet winning streak. It also marks the fourth consecutive year in which the Crimson have dealt Navy its first defeat.<\/p>\n
"Harvard is a strong team with a lot of quality depth and today they were a little too tough for us overall," stated Navy head coach Bill Roberts. "We need to fine-tune something and make it work, hopefully beginning next weekend."<\/p>\n
Junior Adam Meyer (Bethesda, Md.) enjoyed a terrific afternoon, swimming to victory in the 200 butterfly (1:48.26), 200 breaststroke (2:04.38) and 400 IM (3:56.49) events for the Mids. <\/p>\n
His times in the 200 fly and the 400 IM, both events in which he is the current school record holder, stand as the fifth- and sixth-fastest marks, respectively, in program history. On the season, Meyer has now touched first in a team-leading 17 individual events. <\/p>\n
Also producing individual wins for Navy was senior Joe Unrah (Orinda, Calif.) and sophomore Alex Buck (Lisle, Ill.). Unrah won the 50 free in a season-best time of 21.48 to collect his first collegiate victory, while Buck (Lisle, Ill.) produced a season-best showing of his own, capturing the 100 free with in 47.04. <\/p>\n
Sophomore Erik Hunter (Placerville, Calif.) produced two solid performances as well, earning a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1,650 free (15:56.14) and 500 free (4:33.43).<\/p>\n
