Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In NCAA news this week, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/1-ranked-recruit-ryan-hoffer-picks-california\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the biggest story had to be high school junior <\/span><b>Ryan Hoffer\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verbal commitment to swim at UC Berkeley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At just 17 years old, <\/span><b>Hoffer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is one of the fastest 100-yard freestylers of all time, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ryan-hoffer-sets-nag-record-in-17-18-100-yard-freestyle\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recording a 41.23 at the U.S. Juniors &#8211; West back in December<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That time broke <\/span><b>Caeleb Dressel\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17-18 NAG record. <\/span><b>Hoffer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also has solid times in the 100 back (45.58), 100 fly (45.46), and 50 free (19.06), and has internationally competitive long course times as well. His current LCM bests in the 50 and the 100 freestyle are 22.80 and 49.73, respectively, as well as a 52.89 in the 100 butterfly. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegeswimming.com\/swimmer\/273290\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to collegeswimming.com, <\/span><b>Hoffer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the #1 ranked recruit for his class<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Hoffer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is exactly the kind of swimmer Cal will be looking to add to their program, as their one major hole this year was in the sprint freestyle events. Veteran <\/span><b>Federica Pellegrini <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualified for her fourth Olympic Games, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/federica-pellegrini-moves-to-4th-in-world-in-200-free-155-30\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">putting up the fourth fastest 200 freestyle in the world this year (1:55.30)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Pellegrini <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is still the current world record holder in the event, and has earned a gold and silver medal at the Olympics in the event, but was left off the podium in 2012. Despite the controversy surrounding many of the nation\u2019s most high-profile athletes, there were many world-class times posted by Russian swimmers. Standing out was <\/span><b>Evgeny Rylov, <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/evgeny-rylov-breaks-european-record-in-200-back-154-21\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who posted a European record in the 200 backstroke when he touched in 1:54.21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That time makes <\/span><b>Rylov <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the second fastest performer this year only after Australia&#8217;s <\/span><b>Mitch Larkin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Aussie Trials. His time also moves <\/span><b>Rylov <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to be the sixth-fastest performer of all time. <\/span><b>Vlad Morozov <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also made an impact on the world rankings, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/vlad-morozov-races-way-8th-world-100-free-48-09\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking the 100 freestyle in an 8th ranked 48.09<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/vlad-morozov-moves-into-4th-ranked-tie-with-nathan-adrian-in-50-free\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 50 freestyle in a 4th ranked 21.69<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other notable swims included <\/span><b>Daria Ustinova <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daria-k-ustinova-blazes-way-to-3rd-in-world-in-200-back-206-92\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 200 backstroke (2:06.92)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Grigory Tarasevich <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/grigory-tarasevich-sprints-5th-world-100-back-53-03\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 100 backstroke (53.03)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and\u00a0<\/span><b>Svetlana Chimrova <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/svetlana-chimrova-breaks-russian-record-100-fly-57-79\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 100 butterfly (57.79)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-maintains-provisional-suspension-of-yuliya-efimova\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FINA maintained this week that breaststroke star <\/span><b>Yuliya Efimova\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will remain in effect for her positive test for meldonium. All told, 29 men and women qualified for the Rio Olympics. Undoubtedly the biggest story from that meet is what name is missing from the Brazilian roster: <\/span><b>Cesar Cielo, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the current world record holder in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle and the Olympic Gold Medalist from 2008. Although he posted the 52nd 21 second 50 freestyle of his career, it was not enough to qualify for the Olympic Team. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cesar-cielo-misses-home-olympics-bruno-fratus-italo-duarte-claim-50-free-spots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finishing third behind <\/span><b>Bruno Fratus <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Italo Duarte<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Cielo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">missed his last chance of qualifying, having pulled out of the 100 freestyle earlier in the meet. <\/span><b>Cielo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is Brazil\u2019s only swimming gold medalist. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite <\/span><b>Cielo\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miss on making the Olympic team, there were several bright spots for the Brazilian team.
