SAVANNAH, Georgia, December 6. THE Savannah College of Art and Design win and the Wingate University men lead after the second day of the College Invitational swimming meet Saturday (Dec. 6) at the Chatham County Aquatics Center.<\/p>\n
SCAD expanded its lead in the eight-team women's competition over Wingate to 99 points (746-647) on the middle day of the competition. The Bees jumped two positions to second place in the men's meet as they won four events to stand at 391 points. Wingate still leads the six-team men's field with 728 points.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Vitali Pushkar-Verbitsky was a double winner for the Bees on the day as he captured the men's 100-yard butterfly in a meet-record time of 49.01 while he also registered the victory in the 100 backstroke (52.01). Fellow sophomore and defending NAIA national champion Danny Recordon won the 50 freestyle with a meet-record time of 20.47, just .06 off his college record time that he set at last year's national meet. Sophomore Mike Lawrence picked up the other win on the men's side for SCAD as he set a meet record with a time of 2:04.01 in the 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n
In the women's meet, sophomore Stephanie McNicol registered her second win of the Invitational as she won the 200 freestyle in a meet-record time of 1:56.10. McNicol helped the Bees claim the first six spots in the event. Senior Cassie Dixon – the 2007 NAIA national champion – was responsible for the other win as she claimed the victory in the 50 freestyle with a meet-record time of 24.33.<\/p>\n
The Invitational concludes Sunday (Dec. 7) with preliminaries at 10 a.m. with the finals beginning at 4 p.m. Events to be competed include the 400 freestyle relay, 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 100 freestyle, and 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n
