Three American records were set the weekend of Feb. 22-24 in two college conference championships to highlight a very busy conference season and wind up this final pre-championship edition of the Speedo\/CSCAA Top 25 list.<\/p>\n
\tTwo individual records were posted by California's Natalie Coughlin at the women's Pac-10 Championships Feb. 24 in Federal Way, Wash. Natalie erased Catherine Fox's 1999 record of 52.47p with her 52.40 relay leadoff the first day of the meet. Two days later, Coughlin lowered the 200 back mark to 1:52.73. The previous standard was 1:52.98, set by Whitney Hedgepeth in 1992.<\/p>\n
\tIt took just 1:25.37 in the first swimming final of the men's Southeast Conference Championships for Tennessee's medley relay squad of senior Michael Gilliam, junior Jeremy McDonnell, junior Justin Hoggatt and senior Brent Owen to set a new American and Southeast Conference record in the event. The previous American record was 1:25.76, set at the 1997 SEC Championships by Tennessee, and another Tennessee squad set the SEC record at last year's championships.<\/p>\n
\tGilliam leads the nation in the 100 back (46.37 relay leadoff) and McDonnell is the top 100 breaststroker (53.11) from their times at SECs. Two Auburn swimmers were the top in their events from times done at SECs: Dave Denniston in the 200 breast (1:55.37p) and Jeff Somensatto in the 200 fly (1:42.80). <\/p>\n
\tNate Dusing, a senior from Texas, leads the nation in three events with his times from the Big 12 Championships this past weekend: the 200 back (1:41.94), the 100 fly (46.59p) and 200 IM (1:44.31).<\/p>\n
\tCalifornia's Anthony Ervin leads the nation in the 50 and 100 free (19.11-42.21) from the Pac-10 Championships. Also at the Pac-10 men's competition, USC's Klete Keller tied Dan Ketchum of Michigan for the top spot in the 200 free (1:34.99). Ketchum's time was done at the Big-10 conference championships the previous week.<\/p>\n
\tKetchum's teammate, Chris Thompson, is tops in the distance freestyles courtesy of his Big-10 swims: 4:16.22 in the 500 free and 14:31.15 in the 1650 (1000 split: 8:45.85). A third Michigan swimmer, Tim Siciliano, leads the country in the 400 IM (3:42.45).<\/p>\n
\tBesides Coughlin's nation-leading and NCAA record-setting times, No. 1 times were set at the women's Pac-10 Championships by three Stanford swimmers: Jessica Foschi in the 500 free (4:39.74), Tara Kirk in the 200 breast (2:08.54) and Misty Hyman in both butterfly events (51.83-1:55.25). Kirk also leads the country in the 100 breast (59.51) with a time done earlier this season.<\/p>\n
\tTexas' Colleen Lann\u201a leads the nation in the 50 free (22.00), 100 free (47.88) and 200 free (1:44.93) from her times at the Big 12 Championships the weekend of Feb. 15-17; Auburn's Maggie Bowen is tops in the 200 IM (1:57.26) and 400 IM (4:08.27) from times she swam at the Southeastern Conference Championships; and Virginia's Cara Lane has the only sub-16:00 time in the 1650 free (15:58.46) from the ACC Championships Feb. 15-17 (1000 split time 9:40.79).<\/p>\n
\tIt's all over except for the NCAA Championships, which promise to be two very fast, exciting meets. The women's competition takes place March 15-17 in Long Island, N.Y.; the men's competition is a week later at College Station, Texas.<\/p>\n
