COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, November 20. TWO new school records and multiple all-time top-10 finishes were recorded by the NC State swimming and diving programs on the first day of action at the Maryland Invitational on Thursday, Nov. 20. Strong showings by both the men's and women's teams across several events put each squad in great position following day one of competition.<\/p>\n
"Both teams started off with a lot of energy and excitement and it definitely paid off," said head coach Brooks Teal. "We had one of the best first mornings of a championship meet that I can remember in some time, and then we came back and swam even faster tonight. We just have to keep that momentum up tomorrow and continue to perform well like we know we are capable of doing."<\/p>\n
Two school records were established when the women swam the 400 medley relay. Erica Smith offered a 55.56 in the 100 backstroke leadoff leg, while the group as a whole combined for a 3:47.18. Both times stand as new Wolfpack records. Along with Smith, Anna Linkenauger (breaststroke), Patrice Dason (butterfly) and Ashley Richter (freestyle) helped the Pack record its new benchmark time.<\/p>\n
Smith's time bests the old mark of Erika Newell (56.08) set in the 2002, while the overall relay time improves upon the 3:47.77 set by Woodard, Waters, Harrell and Kase in 1981.<\/p>\n
Richter, Meg Thompson, Danielle Caruso and Dason finished third in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:35.30, while Linkenauger took third in the 200 IM on a 2:04.13. Richter then placed fifth in the 50 freestyle with a 23.62, which stands as the third-best mark in school history.<\/p>\n
In diving action, Kristin Davis took fourth (237.90) and Chelsea Ale finished fifth (237.00) in the 1-meter dive.<\/p>\n
Mason McGee hit an NCAA "B" cut and posted the second-best time in school history in the 500 freestyle with a 4:23.74. Andrew Lester finished behind him in third place (4:30.87), while Gaites Brown placed eighth (4:40.16) after swimming a 4:37.00 earlier in the prelims.<\/p>\n
Kevin Woodhull-Smith took first in the 200 IM with a 1:48.97, and Austin Hampton won the 3-meter dive with a 317.65. Woodhull-Smith's time is the third-best in school history.<\/p>\n
Conor Brennan (20.65) and Steven Wright (21.13) took second and seventh respectively in the 50 freestyle, while the all-freshmen tandem of Brennan, Brown, Andrew Fink and Wright finished second in the 200 freestyle relay on a strong 1:23.65.<\/p>\n
