{"id":196429,"date":"2016-04-18T13:21:59","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T20:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=196429"},"modified":"2016-04-18T13:21:59","modified_gmt":"2016-04-18T20:21:59","slug":"tanja-smid-given-4-year-ban-for-doping-retires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tanja-smid-given-4-year-ban-for-doping-retires\/","title":{"rendered":"Tanja Smid Given 4 Year Ban For Doping, Retires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Slovenian national record holder\u00a0<strong>Tanja Smid\u00a0<\/strong>tested positive for a banned substance at the Serbian Open, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidethegames.biz\/index.php\/articles\/1035949\/slovenian-record-holder-admits-failing-drug-test\" target=\"_blank\">Inside the Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fina.org\/news\/doping-offence-tanja-smid-slo\" target=\"_blank\">FINA announced<\/a> a four year ban against the 25 year old, with a start date of March 18, 2016. That would make\u00a0Smid eligible for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Smid retired after the initial positive test, though the Solvenian Anti-Doping Organization still issued the sanction.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0positive test was for\u00a0GW 1516 (Class S.4 Hormone and Metabolic Modulators). <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GW501516\" target=\"_blank\">The substance<\/a> has been proven to improve physical performance. It was added to the list of banned substances in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Smid competed in the 200 breaststroke at the 2012 Olympics and finished second in the same event at the 2010 European Championships.
