{"id":196362,"date":"2016-04-17T11:27:25","date_gmt":"2016-04-17T18:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=196362"},"modified":"2016-04-17T13:36:45","modified_gmt":"2016-04-17T20:36:45","slug":"vladimir-salnikov-explaines-why-yuliya-efimova-still-may-join-russian-olympic-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/vladimir-salnikov-explaines-why-yuliya-efimova-still-may-join-russian-olympic-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Vladimir Salnikov Explains Why Yuliya Efimova Still May Join Russian Olympic Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Maria Dobysheva<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vladimir Salnikov<\/strong>, RUS Swimming President, explained a recent qualification criteria change for those swimmers who weren&#8217;t able to participate in Trials.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, first and second place at Nationals whose results were also under Olympic A Cuts set by RUS Swimming make the team.<\/p>\n<p>But now, a swimmer who has posted a faster result than first or second placed at Nationals but wasn&#8217;t able to swim at Nationals &#8220;due to reasons beyond their control&#8221; can also be considered for Olympic team.<\/p>\n<p>Actually there&#8217;s only one swimmer like this and it&#8217;s a medal contender for Rio, multiple World champion <strong>Yuliya Efimova<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-maintains-provisional-suspension-of-yuliya-efimova\/\" target=\"_blank\">who currently serves temporary suspension for taking meldonium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A situation like this is not something that happens every day. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wada-may-show-mercy-on-meldonium-dopers\/\" target=\"_blank\">WADA announced its statement<\/a> and if an athlete will be amnested, then he or she would have a right to perform at Olympics&#8221; &#8211; Salnikov<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After the WADA\u00a0announcement, Efimova applied to FINA to lift her temporary suspension. FINA declined her application\u00a0and ruled she stays under suspension until\u00a0legal hearings on her case take place.<\/p>\n<p>Head coach of Russian Swimming Team <strong>Sergey Kolmogorov<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In Efimova&#8217;s case, if she is going to be amnested not later than July 3rd [the last day to apply for Olympics], the Federation can consider her for the team based on results she posted at Arena Pro Swim in Orlando. If FINA cancels those results but Efimova is still\u00a0amnested, we will consider her based on her swims from Kazan. This exception would only work if first and\/or second placed swimmers from Nationals will be off Olympic cuts. I mean, Nationals is still a priority.
