DETROIT, Michigan, November 15. THE Wayne State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams each picked up wins over Calvin College and Denison Saturday in a tri-meet at the Matthaei Aquatic Center. In their first home meets of the season, the women's team earned a 99-point win over Calvin College (170-71) and narrowly edged Denison University (122.50-118.50), while the men upended Calvin 173-58, and Denison 125-113. <\/p>\n
The first-place 400 medley relay (3:58.58) of Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.), Courtney Roberts (Milan, Mich.), Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich.\/East Kentwood), and Julie Danaher (Allen Park, Mich.) set the tone early for the Warriors, who won a total of six events on the afternoon. <\/p>\n
Hogle finished in first place and earned an NCAA "A" qualifier in the 200 butterfly (2:06.79), and went one-two with Abbey Green (Dearborn, Mich.) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.19, 1:58.43). <\/p>\n
Roberts notched a "B" cut in her first-place 200 breaststroke swim (2:26.43), and Green took first in the 100 free (54.94). <\/p>\n
In diving, Meghan Jaworski (Dundee, Mich.) placed first on the three-meter board (246.45) and finished second in the one-meter competition (222.60). <\/p>\n
Other second-place finishers included Haintso Rakouth (Saginaw, Mich.\/Heritage) in the 50 free (25.33), Laura Leix (Flint, Mich.\/Southwestern) in the 400 individual medley (4:51.56), Franklin in the 200 backstroke (2:15.66), and Natalia Buso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the 500 (5:13.26) and 1000 freestyle events, improving her national cut in the latter by nearly 13 seconds (10:28.46). <\/p>\n
The Warriors wrapped up the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay (3:41.58) by Green, Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich.\/Jenison), Catherine Leix (Flint, Mich.\/Southwestern), and Agata Zalewska (Swietochlowice, Poland). <\/p>\n
The Warrior men won nine events Saturday, including the 400 medley relay. Sean Smith (Auburn, Mich.\/Bay City Western), Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont.\/Academie Ste. Cecile), Jimmy Lee (Windsor, Ont.\/Riverside), and Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) turned in a time of 3:31.24. Smith's leadoff time of 50.79 also broke a Matthaei pool record for the 100 backstroke. <\/p>\n
Fernando Costa (Porto, Portugal) won two events, the 1000 freestyle (9:45.08) and the 500 freestyle (4:46.18), while his second-place time of 4:10.69 in the 400 individual medley was good for an NCAA "B" national qualifier. <\/p>\n
Smith (1:52.91) and Laschuk (1:59.50) finished one-two in the 200 butterfly, as did Smith (1:52.65) and Lee (1:54.91) in the 200 backstroke as well as Jesper Akesson (Malmo, Sweden) and Bedran in the 50 free, posting respective times of 21.06 and 21.96. Akesson also won the 100 freestyle (47.59). <\/p>\n
In diving, Cayce Bolt (Sterling Hts., Mich.\/Warren Mott) led the field on both the one-meter (276.75) and three-meter (298.60) boards, earning a national cut in the latter. <\/p>\n
Wayne State's next competition will be Dec. 5-6 at the Eastern Michigan Invitational. <\/p>\n
