YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, November 15. THE Ohio swimming and diving team continued its winning ways Saturday afternoon, claiming their third-straight dual meet victory in a 117-88 win over Youngstown State at the Penguins’ Beeghly Natatorium. Ohio (3-2, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) posted first-place finishes in all 13 events against Youngstown State (3-2, 2-0 Horizon League), led by a pair of freestyle wins from sophomore Amanda Cecere (Chelmsford, Mass.). <\/p>\n
Cecere took the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:26.60 and followed that by posting a time of 5:09.11 to win the 500 freestyle. The Bobcats started the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as the team of senior Ashley Marion, freshman Hannah Efries (Westerville, Ohio), sophomore Rachel Heim and junior Chelsey Bower swam the relay in a time of 1:51.92. Three of the four also placed first in an individual event, as Marion (London, Ont.) won the 400 IM in an Ohio season-best time of 4:28.50, Heim (San Diego, Calif.) took the 200 butterfly (2:08.81) and Bower (Bethel Park, Pa.) finished first in the 100 freestyle (53.56). <\/p>\n
In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of sophomore Amanda Traylor (Los Alamitos, Calif.), senior Carine Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and juniors Heather McKenzie (Burke, Va.) and Ashley Poitinger (Akron, Ohio) combined to finish first for Ohio in a time of 1:40.30. Traylor also won the 200 freestyle (1:55.02), while Poitinger won the 50 freestyle (25.10). Freshman Abby Corcoran (Tucson, Ariz) finished just behind Poitinger to take second in the 50 free (25.14). <\/p>\n
The Bobcats had two other one-two finishes as well. Freshman Laura Stasiuk (Kenora, Ont.) and junior Allison Schaefer (Medina, Ohio) finished first and second in the 200 breaststroke, respectively, in times of 2:25.91 and 2:29.92. The other one-two finish was in the 200 backstroke, where freshman Annika Games (Brea, Calif.) won in 2:09.78 and junior Caitlin Drozin (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) finished second (2:12.50). <\/p>\n
In diving, both Ohio divers competed unopposed, as Youngstown State did not enter any divers in the meet. Junior Lindsay Hamilton (White City, Sask.) scored 243.52 in the 1-meter and 241.47 in the 3-meter, while junior Amy Bromberg (Deerfield, Ill.) posted a 217.27 in the 1-meter and a 207.89 in the 3-meter. <\/p>\n
Ohio has now defeated the Penguins four years in a row. <\/p>\n
The Bobcats have a few weeks off before returning to action Dec. 5 when they’ll take part in the three-day Akron Invitational, of which Ohio is the defending champions. The ‘Cats then host Denison Jan. 9, 2009, which will be the team’s next dual meet.<\/p>\n
