LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, November 15. THE University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team swept visiting Missouri on the second session of the two-day format Saturday afternoon at Ralph Wright Natatorium. <\/p>\n
In the women's matchup, the meet came down to the final relay and the No. 23 ranked women upset the No. 21 ranked Tigers 185-168. <\/p>\n
"The women battled from the very beginning and they knew it would come down to the very end," said Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach. "We have many young swimmers who kept their composure for two full sessions against a very good Missouri team." <\/p>\n
The No. 18 ranked men took first in every race and knocked off No. 20 ranked Missouri 218-135. <\/p>\n
"Our men rose to a new level today," said Albiero. "We won every race and even when we had the meet won, we didn't let up. We honored our competitors by competing with our best swims until the very end." <\/p>\n
The men were led by Carlos Van Isschot, who had a pool record in the 100-back and was part of the pool record setting 400-free relay and the 400-medley relay. Vali Preda was a multiple winner, winning the 400-IM, the 200-breast and helped the 400-medley relay touch first. Adam Madarassy won the 100-fly and the 400-medley relay. Shane Lichtenberg gutted out a win in the 1650 with a finish that turned the mile into a 25-yard sprint at the end. <\/p>\n
For the women, Whitney Campbell took top honors in the 50-free and then helped both the 400-medley relay and the 400-free relay to wins as well. Therese Bergstrom won the 100 breast and then helped the 400-medley relay to a win. <\/p>\n
In the 400 medley relay, the foursome of Whitney Campbell, Therese Bergstrom, Nicole Landisch and Liz Halet turned in a winning time of 1:43.79. The Cardinal men bookended a strong middle with a blazing front end and back end. Carlos Van Isschot had a blistering opening leg for the men, handing over a healthy lead to Vali Preda in the breast and Adam Madarassy in the fly. Alex Sweet turned in the fastest anchor of the field to post a time of 1:29.70 for the win. <\/p>\n
In the women's 1650-free, Amanda Henleben missed setting a school record by two tenths of a second as she touched the wall first in 16:57.93. Freshman Stephanie Juncker added a point with a fifth place finish. Shane Lichtenberg swam a strong race that ended up in an all out sprint to the wall to win in 15:56.38. He held off a strong Mizzou challenger Spenser Lauver in for the win. Riley Martin touched third and Anthony Mason <\/p>\n
The women swept the first three spots in the 50 free, led by Whitney Campbell's win in 23.44. Nicole Landisch was second (23.65) and Aileen Cole completed the sweep in 23.81. The men matched that finish with a sweep of their own. Alex Sweet powered in first at 20.58 with freshman Brendon Andrews in hot pursuit for second in 20.82. Andrei Radzionau was third in 20.84. <\/p>\n
In the 100-back, the women were led by Raine Thompson, who won by one tenth of a second in 57.01 over MU's Lauren Lavigna , For the men, Carlos Van Isschot scorched the pool record with a 48.65 for first. Returning Olympian Pedro Oliveira held on for second (50.91) and Peyton Bobo added a crucial point for fifth, going 51.54. <\/p>\n
In the 200-breast, it was a battle between teammates Therese Bergstrom and Anna Dishuck. Bergstrom touched in 2:17.00 with Dishuck in her wake, going 2:18.28. Kayla Durnil broke up the sweep with third just out-touching newcomer Fanny Lilliestrom, who held on for fourth, going 2:21.07. Vali Preda used a powerful front half swim in the 200-breast and then held off the charging Martin Cernansky for the win, going 2:02.69. Luke Wakefield was fourth with a time of 2:09.76. <\/p>\n
In the 100-fly, Nicole Landisch won in 55.78 and Sarah Andrews was fourth (58.01) and Jenny Schimenti added a point in fifth, going 58.17. For the men, returning Olympian Adam Madarassy set a pool a record with a 49.09 time. Fellow Olympian Pedro Oliveira touched second, posting a time of 50.15. Rafal Kuchta, snuck in third place with a strong finish, posting a time of 50.63. Freshman Tim Collins added a point in fifth with a time of 51.44. <\/p>\n
In the 200-free, Liz Halet was the top Cardinal finisher with a third place finish, going 151.22, Raine Thompson was fourth in 1:55.01. Andrei Radzionau had a win in what has become his signature event with a time of 1:40.14. Brendon Andrews was fourth, posting a time of 1:41.97. <\/p>\n
In the 400-IM, the finish turned into a sprint with Louisville's Abby Miller breaking up the Mizzou sweep with a third, turning in a time of 42969. Teammates Amanda Henleben made a late move and finished fourth in 4:29.88. Fanny Lilliestrom took fifth For the men, Louisville's Vali Preda won the men's 400-IM in 4:04.62. Teammate Luke Wakefield snagged second in 4:05.51 and Shane Lichtenberg held on for fourth 4:11. 26. <\/p>\n
For the women, the meet hinged on the final 400-Free Relay, Anna Dishuck handed over the lead in the second leg to freshman Aileen Cole who held off a charging Missouri and gave a narrow lead to anchor Liz Halet. The junior opened the lead to a body length for the win 3:24.54 and helped shatter the pool record of 3:25.59. For the men, Alex Sweet set the pace, touching first for the A-team in the first leg, Brendon Andrews continued to build a lead in the second leg. Carlos Isschot was the third leg and held the lead easily. Andrei Radzionau anchored and cruised to the win in a pool record time of 3:01.23. Adam Madarassy anchored the B-relay and took third in 3:06. 95. <\/p>\n
