THE first day of finals at the FINA World Cup stop held in Stockholm featured a pair of world records as the meet got off to a fast start.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#39;s Cameron van der Burgh downed his global standard in the 50 breast even further, while Peter Marshall claimed compatriot Ryan Lochte&#39;s world record in the 100 back.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 800 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nDenmark&#39;s Lotte Friis claimed the distance title in 8:14.99, while Chile&#39;s Kristel Kobrich finished second in 8:20.09.  South Africa&#39;s Kathryn Meaklim completed the podium in 8:32.72.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nSweden&#39;s Stefan Nystrand was out under his world-record pace, but came up just short of his 45.83 set at the 2007 Berlin stop with a winning time of 46.03.  South Africa&#39;s Lyndon Ferns took second in 47.02, while France&#39;s Alain Bernard placed third in 47.04.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nSweden&#39;s Petra Granlund pocketed first place with a time of 1:54.77, while compatriot Josefin Lillhage finished second in 1:55.37.  Kara Lynn Joyce of the U.S. wound up taking third-place money with a 1:57.25.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Cameron van der Burgh broke 26 seconds as he bettered his world record in the sprint breast.  van der Burgh clocked a time of 25.94 to down his short-lived standard of 26.08 set in Moscow this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Vlad Polyakov of Kazakhstan took second in 26.72, while Australia&#39;s Christian Sprenger placed third in 26.86.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Sarah Katsoulis cruised in the 100 breast with a triumphant time of 1:04.84.  She downed Sweden&#39;s Joline Hostman, who placed a distant second in 1:06.13.  Tara Kirk of the U.S. completed the top three in 1:06.20.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nDenmark&#39;s Chris Christensen topped the distance medley event with a time of 4:11.47.  Brazil&#39;s Diogo Yabe placed second in 4:13.12, while Denmark&#39;s Tobias Urban Hansen rounded out the podium in 4:28.31 after Robert Margalis of the U.S. was disqualified.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nSingapore&#39;s Li Tao grabbed the victory in 56.87, while Denmark&#39;s Jeanette Ottesen finished second in 57.46.  Sweden&#39;s Petra Granlund wound up third in 57.78.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nPeter Marshall of the U.S. provided the second world record of the day as he blitzed the 100 back with a time of 49.94.  That effort eclipsed the global and American standard of 49.99 set by Ryan Lochte in Shanghai.<\/p>\n<p>Compatriot Randall Bal placed second in 50.30, while Australia&#39;s Robert Hurley took third in 51.01.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nCroatia&#39;s Sanja Jovanovic earned a first-place finish with a time of 27.16 in the sprint back.  Brazil&#39;s Fabiola Molina touched second in 27.45, while Australia&#39;s Sophie Edington took third in 27.58.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nRussia&#39;s Nikolay Skvortsov took the first-place check with a time of 1:52.33, while Australia&#39;s Chris Wright finished second in 1:53.71.  France&#39;s Christophe Lebon put in a third-place readout of 1:54.48.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Kathryn Meaklim claimed the event title with a time of 2:09.54, while Brazil&#39;s Joanna Maranhao-Melo placed second in 2:11.36.  South Africa&#39;s Mandy Loots, who took the swim out under world-record place, wound up third in 2:11.46.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nOus Mellouli of Tunisia cleaned up in the middle distance race with a time of 3:38.42.  Germany&#39;s Paul Biedermann finished second in 3:42.06, while Denmark&#39;s Mads Glaesner placed third in 3:42.79.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Marieke Guehrer grabbed the splash-and-dash crown with a time of 24.25.  Sweden&#39;s Therese Alshammar touched second in 24.32, while compatriot Josefin Lillhage took third in 24.47.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nUkraine&#39;s Igor Borysik picked up the title with a time of 2:05.68, while Japan&#39;s Kazuki Otsuka took second in 2:06.47.  Australia&#39;s Christian Sprenger wrapped up the top three with a 2:06.48.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 IM<\/b><br \/>\nOus Mellouli captured another title, this time with a 52.78 in the sprint medley.  South Africa&#39;s Darian Townsend finished second in 52.94, while Nick Brunelli of the U.S. pocketed third with a time of 53.34.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nNew Zealand&#39;s Melissa Ingram cruised in the race with a time of 2:04.88 for the win.  Australia&#39;s Sophie Edington turned in a second-place time of 2:06.18, while Japan&#39;s Tomoyo Fukuda picked up third in 2:06.40.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Matt Jaukovic posted a time of 22.85 to win the sprint fly, while Russia&#39;s Evgeny Korotyshkin took second in 23.04.
