The team was awarded the honor on Monday.

Read the full press release below:

Charlotte, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte women’s swim team was recognized on Monday, April 11, 2016, as the department’s top academic program for the 2014-15 year. The team put together a combined grade point average of 3.60 to rank highest amongst the department’s 19 teams. The recognition came during the school’s awards convocation, honoring the team from the prior academic year who had highest cumulative GPA.

“I am proud of the dedication and commitment of the 2015 women’s swim team,” said Interim Athletic Director Cherie Swarthout. “The team not only claimed the school’s first national championship, they did so with a dedication to the classroom. As a whole, our athletic department places a strong emphasis on excelling not only in your sport, but outside it. The focus on academics is evident in the fact that this was the athletic department’s fifth consecutive year seeing a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.”

The 2014-15 team leaped to the top of the department after 16 of the program’s 25 student-athletes completed the year with a 3.5 GPA or better. The team also saw three athletes secure a 4.0 at the conclusion of the spring semester.

“Our women’s program strives to be the best in all that they do,” said Head Coach Jeff Dugdale. “Since starting the program we have had a friendly rivalry with the awesome tennis program and finally we can claim a victory. I guarantee that will not sit well thus we must keep focused in order to maintain.”

Although the program has held high academic standards, this marks the first time that the team has secured the award as the men’s and women’s tennis programs have held a control of the honor in previous years. They would fall just shy last year, for the 2013-14 team, posting above a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

The department honor was not the first for the 2014-15 team as the Royals placed eight members on the College Swimming Coaches Association of America’s Scholar All-American list. In addition, two more swimmers would be named to the honorable mentions team. As a team, they would rank fourth amongst Division II women’s swimming programs for cumulative GPA.

To be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a “B” time standard or competed at their respective qualifying meets.

To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the spring semester.

Press Release courtesy of Queens University of Charlotte.

While the Queens University Women’s swim team earned the school’s first NCAA Divison II Championship during the 2014-2015 season, the Royals also posted the top GPA out of all Queens

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3,6

post-195128","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-featured","category-college

Women's Swimming Claims Queens'
