COLLEGE PARK, Maryland. November 8. JUNIORS Jen Vogel and Andy Dilz led the Maryland swimming and diving team against North Carolina and George Mason at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium.<\/p>\n
Maryland swept George Mason in both men's and women's action but slid against North Carolina, a conference contender which had both squads finish second a year ago at the ACC Championships.<\/p>\n
Vogel was victorious in the 100 fly (55.71) and 200 IM (2:04.36) for the women's squad, who put together another solid performance in the pool for Maryland. The Terps were particularly strong in the 200 fly event, with the Red and Black placing three in the top five. Nina Rossi (2:04.36) placed second, Patti DeScenza (2:04.42) third, and freshman Meggie Schmidt swam a personal-best 2:04.79 en route to a fourth-place finish. The 200 free relay team of Yelena Skalinskaya, Annie Fittin, Jackie Davidson and Blair Cross won its third consecutive meet. Freshman Alisa Kurbatova doubled up for the Terps, taking first in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Fittin captured the 100 back (57.70), while Davidson followed closely behind in second (57.98).<\/p>\n
On the men's side, Dilz shined for Maryland, winning the 50 free with a personal-best time of 20:68 and leading off for the first-place 200 free relay squad followed by John Closs, Matt Gruszecki, and Mitch Challacombe. Senior Eric Cullen continued his steadiness in the 100 breast, placing second (56.79).<\/p>\n
"I am really proud of this team's willingness to prepare," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "We had some lifetime and season-best times today and those are things that I am really happy about." <\/p>\n
