BURNABY, British Columbia, November 4. ON Sunday afternoon, the University of Alberta swimming program overtook Japan's Kinki University to claim the overall title at the 2008 Clan Cup International, hosted by Simon Fraser University. Alberta scored top points in both the men's and women's competitions, to win their overall title with 303.5 points. SFU finished second overall with 281.5 points, while day one leader Kinki University finished third overall with 211 points. <\/p>\n
Despite totaling only five gold medals at the two-day event, Alberta's consistency, totaling ten silver and 11 bronze medals, allowed the Golden Bears and Pandas to maximize points. SFU led with 12 overall gold medals, while Kinki tallied 11 gold medals.
\nFour more meet records fell on Sunday's final day of competition, with SFU's Vicky Sui (Burnaby, B.C.) breaking another record, winning the 50m butterfly in a time of 27.55. Sui was the top female performer at the meet, accumulating 48 overall points and also won the 50m freestyle on Sunday. Former Japanese Olympian Noriko Inada broke her second meet record on Sunday in the 100m backstroke, completing the finals in a time of 59.71. Victoria's Mackenzie Downing narrowly missed breaking her own meet record in the 200m butterfly, winning the event in a time of 2:18.15. Alberta's Kayla Voytechek won the 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:12.32. <\/p>\n
On the men's side, Kinki University's Junta Kawashita was the top male performer of the meet, accumulating 56 overall points. Kawashita claimed his third title in the 200m freestyle, setting a new Clan Cup record in a time of 1:49.86. Alberta's Joshua Au was on Kawashita's heels the entire meet, finishing second in the 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly, and setting a new meet record in the 200m butterfly by winning that event in a time of 2:05.34. SFU's Andrew Poznikoff was the Clan's top performer at the meet, winning the 50m freestyle in a time of 24:15.<\/p>\n
