RALEIGH, North Carolina, November 1. SENIORS Yelena Skalinskaya and Dong Kim each swept the 50 and 100 freestyle events while competing on a pair of first-place relays to lead the Maryland swimming and diving squad at NC State and Duke this weekend. <\/p>\n
Skalinskaya combined with Jackie Davidson, Annie Fittin and Blair Cross to capture the 200 free relay to begin the meet on Friday night in Raleigh. The men's edition, led by Kim and followed by John Closs, Ryan Greene and Andy Dilz, finished first next to set up a solid start for the Terps. Maryland was also victorious on both sides in the 400 free relay with the team of Kim, Eric Cullen, Roger Dent and Dilz winning the men's portion and Skalinskaya, Fittin, Jen Vogel and Davidson placing first in the women's. <\/p>\n
Skalinskaya went on to win the 50 free (23.76) and 100 free (51.52) for the second meet in a row. Kim swam a 20.20 and 45.45 in the 50 and 100, respectively, in his first-place finishes. <\/p>\n
The women's team picked up their first ACC win of the year as a unit, defeating NC State, 189-162. The Terps fell to Duke, 199-154, and now sit at 2-1 and 1-1 in conference play. Freshmen Ginny Glover and Alexa Hamilton individually picked up critical points for the Terps, winning the 200 backstroke and 200 breast, respectively. Vogel took first in the 200 fly. <\/p>\n
In addition to Kim, Cullen won the 100 breaststroke (57.57) and Dent took first in the 200 butterfly (1:52.48) individually for the men's squad. As a team, Maryland fell to Duke, 203-144, and NC State, 198-151, to drop to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in ACC action. <\/p>\n
The Terps return to the pool next weekend when they play host to North Carolina and George Mason at noon on Saturday at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium. <\/p>\n
