PITTSBURGH, Pa., Nov. 11. THE University of Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams both improved to 4-0 on the season with wins over Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon (November 11) at Trees Pool in Pittsburgh. <\/p>\n
The 11th-ranked Virginia men tallied a narrow 122-119 win over the Panthers, while the 12th-ranked UVa women extended their consecutive dual meet winning streak to 24 with a 132-109 triumph over Pittsburgh. The
\nPittsburgh men's team is now 5-1 on the season, while the Panther women fall to 3-5.<\/p>\n
The 11th-ranked Virginia men won only five events, but swept the top three places in all five of the victories for a 122-119 victory over Pittsburgh.
\nFreshman Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif.\/Buena) led a top-three UVa sweep in the 500 free (4:26.47) and also finished second in the 200 free (1:39.72). Sophomore Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y.\/Great Neck South) and
\nsenior Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md.\/Sherwood) were second and third in the 500 free with times of 4:34.45 and 4:35.02, respectively. <\/p>\n
Earlier in the meet, Grimes won the 1000 free in a time of 9:11.25, with DeMarco in second (9:18.21) and senior Michael Fuller (Richmond, Va.\/Mills Godwin) taking third (9:25.86). Fuller also earned a victory in the meet as he led a top-three UVa sweep in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.11, just one one-hundredth of a second ahead of sophomore teammate Dan Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va.\/Bishop Ireton). Soph Evan Taylor (Issaquah, Wash.\/Issaquah) touched in 1:53.45 to take third place. <\/p>\n
In the 200 individual medley, sophomore Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand\/Germantown Academy) led a one-two-three Virginia finish as he posted a winning time of
\n1:52.19. Junior Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va.\/Woodside) was second (1:55.20) and freshman Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla.\/Bartlesville)took third (1:56.56). <\/p>\n
Sophomore Jonathan Baird (Nashville, Tenn.\/Montgomery Bell Academy) led the fifth Virginia top-three sweep of
\nthe meet. Baird won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.72, while Marshall was just six one-hundredths of a second behind in 2:06.78. Senior Justin Capuco (Burtonsville, Md.\/Good Counsel) was third in 2:07.99.<\/p>\n
Pittsburgh's Mike Grub won the 50 free (20.83) and the 100 free (45.70) and swam the leadoff leg on the Panthers' 400 free relay team that posted a winning time of 3:03.12.<\/p>\n
SOPHOMORE Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C.\/Providence) won three events in leading the 12th-ranked Virginia women to a 132-109 victory over the Panthers. UVa won nine of 13 events in winning their 24th-consecutive dual
\nmeet. Lane won the 200 free in a time of 1:52.52, then touched in 2:02.37 in winning the 200 butterfly. She earned her third win in the 500 free with a time of 4:53.63. <\/p>\n
Freshman Jenna Bridges (Jacksonville, Fla.\/Bolles School)won a pair of events for the 'Hoos. Bridges took the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.19 and then clocked a time of 52.20 in winning the 100 freestyle. <\/p>\n
Senior Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del.\/ St. Mark's)and freshman Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla.\/Trinity Prep) both won individual events and also swam legs on UVa's winning 400 medley relay that posted a time of 3:56.14. Iffland won the 200 back (2:05.46), while Dykehouse was victorious in the 1000 free (10:07.56).
\nDykehouse was second to Lane in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:03.63 as well. Junior Caitlin Anderson (Charlottesville, Va.\/St. Anne's-Belfield) and soph Lisa Favreau (Alamo, Calif.\/Monte Vista) also swam legs on the Cavaliers' winning 400 medley relay. <\/p>\n
Freshman Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga.\/Marist School) rounded out the event winners for Virginia as she posted a time of 2:23.14 in winning the 200 breaststroke. Baly was also second in the 200 I.M. and 500 free with a times of 2:07.43 and 4:59.91, respectively.<\/p>\n
