ST. BONAVENTURE, New York, November 13. THE Viking men's swimming and diving team defeated St. Bonaventure for the second year in a row on Saturday (Nov. 13), winning 136-105 in CSU's final road dual meet of the Fall.<\/p>\n
"We had a really good meet, much closer than the final score indicates," head coach Wally Morton said. "This is one of the most difficult pools in the country to swim in, but we adapted well to the conditions and earned a very good win."<\/p>\n
St. Bonaventure took three of the first five events, owning an 11 point lead early in the meet. The teams then took a break from the swimming events to hold the diving competition, and that was the turning point in the meet.<\/p>\n
Josh Gonzalez swept both of the diving events, swinging the momentum back in the Vikings' favor. Gonzalez followed up his best performance of the year in the 3-meter dive (316.12) with a very close win in the 1-meter, edging the Bonnies' Mike Murphy, 277.50-274.65.<\/p>\n
"The team got really excited after Josh's performance and came together," Morton said. "In the locker room they held a quick team meeting and just said that they were not going to lose. They then came out fired up and did a great job the rest of the day."<\/p>\n
The men did not lose an event the rest of the day. Berry Thompson won the 100 free (46.34), helped the 400 relay team to a first place finish (3:08.59) and placed second in the 50 free (21.37) to fellow CSU swimmer Justin Hill (21.23).<\/p>\n
Mark de Swardt won three individual events, taking first in the 1,000 free (9:43.24), 500 free (4:37.44) and 200 fly (1:53.37). Zvonimir Androic won the 200 back in 1:55.15 while Deni Gasparin finished first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.65. <\/p>\n
"This was a good win over a top level Atlantic 10 team," Morton said. "I really feel good about this win."
\nCleveland State (5-1-1) will continue its season next weekend with its last big road competition of the fall, the Northwestern TYR Invitational, which will take place Nov. 19-21.<\/p>\n
