ANN ARBOR, Michigan, November 1. NUMBER 1 Texas lengthened its lead after the opening day of competition and finished off a pair of victories over No. 3 Michigan and No. 14 Indiana Saturday at Michigan’s Canham Natatorium. <\/p>\n
UT held a 14-point cushion over Michigan heading into Saturday, but the Horns pulled away to a 221.5-166.5 victory. Texas defeated Indiana by a 209-153 count.<\/p>\n
Texas opened the session with a win in the 800 freestyle relay, as junior Dave Walters, senior Sean Patton, junior Ricky Berens and senior Michael Klueh finished in 6:28.89. UT’s “B” relay of sophomore Bryan Collins, freshmen Neil Caskey and Kyle McNeilis and senior Ryan Verlatti took third in 6:42.18.<\/p>\n
In a return to his former home pool at Michigan, junior Scott Spann claimed the 100 breaststroke in 55.73. Freshman Eric Friedland took fifth in 57.76, and sophomore Brian Wilson placed seventh at 58.09. Freshman Matt Hoyland placed eighth in 58.53. Junior Hill Taylor took second in the 100 backstroke in 49.13, and sophomore Scott Jostes followed in fourth in 49.95. Junior Alan Maher placed sixth in 51.23. <\/p>\n
Klueh led a strong showing for the Horns in the 1,650 freestyle. Klueh was victorious in 15:15.47, and freshman Jackson Wilcox took third in 15:44.77. Junior Jim Robertson placed fourth in 15:49.09. Berens added another win to the Texas tally when he claimed the 200 butterfly in 1:46.31. Caskey placed fifth in 1:50.12, and Wilson took sixth in 1:50.86.<\/p>\n
Walters captured the 100 freestyle in 44.04, and he was followed by sophomore Jonathan Jackson, who took third in 44.93. Freshman Jimmy Feigen placed sixth in 45.44. Spann added a win in the 200 breaststroke in 2:01.34. Friedland took third at 2:03.38. <\/p>\n
UT finished off the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay, where the Horns finished in 2:57.45.<\/p>\n
Texas returns to action on Friday, Nov. 21 when it hosts Washington at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. <\/p>\n
