THE first night of finals at the Singapore stop of the FINA World Cup featured a circuit record by Australia&#39;s Robert Hurley, who broke the 50 back world record during the Sydney stop.  Additionally, Ous Mellouli of Tunisia nearly scored another title trifecta, but settled for two first-place cash prizes.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 800 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Melissa Corfe cruised to victory in the women&#39;s distance event with a time of 8:35.75.  Compatriot Kathryn Meaklim followed with a second-place finish in 8:44.22, while New Zealand&#39;s Joyce Wiegersma placed third in 8:45.16.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nWorld-record holder Stefan Nystrand took the crown with an easy 46.78, downing Australia&#39;s Mitchell Patterson (47.60) by a fairly wide margin.  Australia&#39;s Tom Miller wound up taking third in 48.09.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Kelly Stubbins walked away with the title when she clocked a 1:56.38, touching out New Zealand&#39;s Melissa Ingram (1:56.64).  Kara Lynn Joyce of the U.S. complete the podium with a third-place 1:58.32.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Cameron van der Burgh took a run at Oleg Lisogor&#39;s world record of 26.17, but settled for bettering his African record of 26.61 with a swift time of 26.37.  Christian Sprenger of Australia finished second in 26.86, while Brazil&#39;s Eduardo Fischer touched third in 27.12.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Sarah Katsoulis claimed the title in a time of 1:05.70, while Tara Kirk of the U.S. settled for second-place money with a time of 1:06.33.  Sweden&#39;s Joline Hostman took third in 1:06.42.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nOlympic gold medalist Ous Mellouli of Tunisia touched out Brazil&#39;s Thiago Pereira, 4:02.93 to 4:03.06, for another first-place cash prize, while Germany&#39;s Yannick Lebherz collected third with a time of 4:17.16.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nHost country Singapore scored a victory in the women&#39;s 100 fly as Li Tao dropped a time of 56.85 on the field for the first-place money.  Sweden&#39;s Sarah Sjostrom wound up taking second in 57.39, while Australia&#39;s Marieke Guehrer took third in 58.06.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Robert Hurley blazed the pool with a time of 50.28. The time beat the World Cup standard of 50.58 set by Thomas Rupprath back in 2002. Compatriot Ashley Delaney placed second in 51.18, while Peter Marshall beat teammate Randall Bal, 51.63 to 51.64, for third-place honors.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Sophie Edington touched out Brazil&#39;s Fabiola Molina, 27.56 to 27.57, for the sprint back victory.  Russia&#39;s Anastasia Zueva completed the top three in 27.62.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Chris Wright topped Brazil&#39;s Thiago Pereira, 1:54.38 to 1:54.61, in the distance fly event, while Australia&#39;s Sam Ashby wound up third in 1:58.01.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Kathryn Meaklim cruised in the medley event with a triumphant time of 2:10.59.  Russia&#39;s Svetlana Karpeeva settled for second in 2:12.43, while New Zealand&#39;s Natalie Wiegersma placed third in 2:13.13.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nOus Mellouli became the first double-winner of the Singapore stop with a time of 3:42.37 in the middle distance affair.  Australia&#39;s Robert Hurley touched second in 3:45.83, while teammate Nicholas Ffrost turned in a third-place 3:49.22.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nSweden went 1-2 in the women&#39;s splash-and-dash as Therese Alshammar topped the sprinters with a time of 24.33.  Teammate Claire Hedenskog, meanwhile, dead-heated with Marieke Guehrer of Australia with matching times of 24.94 for second-place honors.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Christian Sprenger hit the wall first with a commanding conquest in 2:05.48.  South Africa&#39;s William Diering wound up second in 2:09.09, while Germany&#39;s Marco Koch took third in 2:10.48.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 IM<\/b><br \/>\nBrazil&#39;s Thiago Pereira shot down Tunisia&#39;s Ous Mellouli in the sprint medley, 52.74 to 53.12.  South Africa&#39;s Cameron van der Burgh rounded out the top three in 53.26.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nNew Zealand&#39;s Melissa Ingram topped the 200 back in 2:05.63, while South Africa&#39;s Melissa Corfe touched second in 2:06.34.  Australia&#39;s Sophie Edington completed the podium in 2:08.83, just touching out Russia&#39;s Anastasia Zueva (2:08.87).<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Matt Jaukovic gave his world record of 22.50 from the Sydney stop another run, but wound up with a winning time of 22.82.
