STANFORD, California, October 31. THE Cardinal men’s swim team got their Pac-10 season off to a good start with a 134-70 win over Washington on Friday afternoon from the Avery Aquatic Center. Stanford improved to (2-0, 1-0 Pac-10), while Washington fell to (5-2, 0-2 Pac-10). <\/p>\n
Stanford was led by a combination of key returners and talented freshman to easily defeat the Huskies. <\/p>\n
In the relays the Stanford `A’ teams showed some early season form winning both the 200 medley and free relays. To open the meet, the team of Eugene Godsoe, Paul Kornfeld, Austin Staab, and Jason Dunford captured the medley relay with a time of 1:30.54 to win by three seconds. <\/p>\n
In the free relay the team of Staab, Jason Dunford, David Dunford, and Alex Coville won with a time of 1:21.40. <\/p>\n
Jason Dunford, Coville and Kornfeld also took individual events as well for the Cardinal. Dunford dominated the field in the 100 free, winning with a time of 44.70. Coville showed his sprint free skills, winning the 50 free with a time of 20.81 seconds. Kornfeld, the breast specialist, won the 200 breast with a time of 2:03.95. <\/p>\n
The other veteran with an event win was Nate Cass in the 200 IM who swam a time of 1:51.97. <\/p>\n
A pair of Stanford freshman also captured event wins on Friday. First, in the 1,000 free, Chad La Tourette won the with a time of 9:13.58. In the 200 fly it was Bobby Bollier who finished in 1:49.12. <\/p>\n
Washington had a pair of event winners as well. David Bai captured the 200 free (1:40.35) and Scott Spansail captured the 500 free (4:30.68). <\/p>\n
Stanford will next compete when they host rival California on Wednesday, November 12, from the Avery Aquatic Center at 2:00 pm. <\/p>\n
