EAST LANSING, Michigan, October 31. THE Michigan State women's swimming and diving team got its first victory of the season on Friday (Oct. 31) afternoon at McCaffree Pool, defeating Houston 126-117. MSU is now 1-3 on the year while the Cougars are 2-1. <\/p>\n
Senior Heather Kiluk headlined the Spartans' effort as she won the 1,000 free, with a time of 10:12.37, and also won the 200 IM, with a time of 2:06.87. <\/p>\n
"Heather has been great. She's taken on so many different events this year, and she's doing it so willingly, it's awesome the way she's been able to do those things," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "This is her last year and she's swimming really well. That 1,000 time was her best time by quite a bit, so I'm really happy for her. She was the star of the meet." <\/p>\n
The Cougars entered the meet 2-0 and ended up winning eight of 13 events on the afternoon. <\/p>\n
"Houston has a really nice team, they swam well," said Gianiodis. "They set three pool records, which is pretty impressive when you consider we have a lot of Big Ten teams cycle through this pool. But we swam well too. Heather did a great job; that's the first time she has swam the 1,000 in a long time. Our sprinters did really well too – Erinn Wertz had a good meet." <\/p>\n
Wertz, a junior from Rockford, clocked a time of 52.97 in the 100 free which was good for first place. <\/p>\n
Sophomore Stephanie Fisher swam the first leg of the Spartans 400 medley relay team, which took first place with a time of 3:51.28. Fisher was joined by freshman Kerry Sodonis, sophomore Becca Ebner and senior Julie Kahn. <\/p>\n
Fisher also took first in the 50 free with a time of 24.14. <\/p>\n
"I'm impressed with the way we responded. Our kids were focused enough to score more points. Up here, we're not used to getting beat like that in diving – we're used to getting points, not giving them up. Our sprinters really came through to help us out today." <\/p>\n
The Spartans will be back in action Nov. 14 against Grand Valley State. <\/p>\n
