Thursday 31 March 2016 Photo: Simon Watts \/ www.bwmedia.co.nz\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-192838\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: BW Media<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Zealand has begun it\u2019s Olympic qualification process, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/six-new-zealand-swimmers-qualify-for-2016-rio-olympics-more-to-come\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with six total swimmers qualifying in eight different events at the conclusion of the country\u2019s trials in Auckland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Mark Saunders, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming New Zealand\u2019s head selector, had optimistic comments on the state of the nation\u2019s swimming: \u201cThey swam fast in the morning and faster at night which is something we have not always managed to achieve in the past, and must do if we want to move from heats into semi-finals and finals.\u201d Veteran <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/glenn-snyders-punches-ticket-to-2016-rio-olympics\/\"><b>Glenn Snyders <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won the 100 breaststroke to qualify for his third Olympic Games in 1:00.08<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the 28-year-old stating he is planning for a 59-low come the Games this summer. Several US-based New Zealand swimmers will compete at the Canadian trials next week, including Florida backstroker <\/span><b>Corey Main<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and NCAA medallist <\/span><b>Matt Hutchins, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in hopes of joining the New Zealand roster for Rio. Three Chinese swimmers, <\/span><b>Wang Lizhuo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>An Jiabao<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Zhao Ying<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zhao-ying-wang-lizhuo-an-jiabao-named-as-3-chinese-swimmers-to-fail-drug-tests\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all tested positive last year and recently completed all three cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Wang <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>An <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportskeeda.com\/swimming\/chinese-swimmers-wang-lizhuo-an-jiabao-warned-clenbuterol-use\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both were issued warning from the Chinese Swimming Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while <\/span><b>Zhao <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has yet to be officially reprimanded by the national governing body. None of these three swimmers have been members of a Chinese Olympic or World Championship team. There are also reportedly three unknown swimmers who have tested positive, with the official judicial process ongoing. Barring any change in developments from Chinese swimming, that performance should prevent her from a chance to defend her 400 IM title this summer. While she led out of preliminaries with a 4:44.17, <\/span><b>Ye <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added six seconds at night to finish in 4:50.74. Both times were outside of the FINA A standard for Olympic qualification. She clipped <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cameron-mcevoy-turns-heat-100-free-australia\/\"><b>Bronte Campbell\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">52.85 from the NSW Champs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sarah-sjostrom-blasts-top-ranked-52-78-in-100-free\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">52.78 to claim the #1 world ranking in the women\u2019s 100 freestyle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Sjostrom <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sarah-sjostrom-pops-a-24-22-in-50-free-in-sweden\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won the 50 freestyle in 24.22<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was just off of her top-ranked 24.17 from the Austin stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sarah-sjostrom-posts-sizzling-double-with-top-ranked-50-fly-2nd-ranked-200-free\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the 200 freestyle in 1:54.87<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is good enough for second in the world behind <\/span><b>Katie Ledecky. This created interesting scenarios where the standard to qualify for the Games was faster than the French record in the event; indeed, on the first night <\/span><b>Lara Gangreon <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lara-grangeon-sets-400-im-french-record\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set a new French record in the 400 IM (4:36.61)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but failed to clear the French standard for the event (4:35.40). Notable qualifications through the sixth day of the meet included <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/camille-lacourt-leads-way-as-several-more-olympic-berths-earned-in-france\/\"><b>Camille Lacourt <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(100 back &#8211; 52.97)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jeremy-stravius-rockets-to-2nd-in-world-in-100-free-in-france\/\"><b>Jeremy<\/b> <b>Stravius <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 100 free (47.97)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jeremy-stravius-rockets-to-2nd-in-world-in-100-free-in-france\/\"><b>Charlotte Bonnet <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 200 free (1:56.32)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/race-video-watch-controversial-yannick-agnel-200-free-from-france\/\"><b>Coralie Balmy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 400 free (4:05.38)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and defending champion <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/defending-olympic-champion-florent-manaudou-blasts-21-42-in-50-free-in-france\/\"><b>Flourent Manaudou <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 50 free (21.42)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most shocking, however, was the controversy surrounding the men\u2019s 200 freestyle, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/controversy-reigns-as-defending-200-free-olympic-champ-yannick-agnel-could-be-out-after-3rd-at-trials\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which saw defending Olympic Gold Medalist <\/span><b>Yannick Agnel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finish third due to an apparent touchpad error<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Looking at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/race-video-watch-controversial-yannick-agnel-200-free-from-france\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">race video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it appears that <\/span><b>Agnel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished second by roughly half a body length over <\/span><b>Jordan Pothain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While neither <\/span><b>Stravius, Pathian,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>Agnel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished under the French standard of 1:46.06 for the event, they were well under the FINA A standard for the event.
