﻿{"id":193234,"date":"2016-04-03T16:11:47","date_gmt":"2016-04-03T23:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=193234"},"modified":"2016-04-03T16:11:47","modified_gmt":"2016-04-03T23:11:47","slug":"buffalo-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/buffalo-sunday\/","title":{"rendered":"Matea Samardzic Wins Twice At Final Night of Speedo Sectionals Buffalo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Cathleen Pruden, Swimming World College Intern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the final night of Speedo Sectionals in Buffalo, no new Olympic Trials cuts were earned, but plenty of swimmers wrapped up the weekend in quick fashion.<\/p>\n<p>The Berkeley Aquatic Club women began the evening with a win in the 200 freestyle relay.\u00a0<strong>Claire O&#8217;Mara<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alexa Buckley<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sophia Kudryashova<\/strong>,\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Hannah Womer\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 1:47.28, well ahead of Victor Swim Club&#8217;s<strong> Bailey Klafehn<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Megan Deuel<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kaitlyn Ringhoff<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Alyssa Helak<\/strong>\u00a0in<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>1:49.11. Asphalt Green&#8217;s team of\u00a0<strong>Alessia McGowan<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Nicole Aarts<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mary-Mckenzie Grier<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Krystal Lara\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 1:49.62.<\/p>\n<p>The Town of Tonawanda Titans out touched Chelsea Piers 1:37.67 to 1:37.78 for the men&#8217;s 200 freestyle relay title.\u00a0<strong>Matthew Marsh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Evan Graesser<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kyle Griffin<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Allan Collins\u00a0<\/strong>won it for the Titans while\u00a0<strong>John Montesi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Aedan Lewis<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Phillip Zyskowski<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Patrick Clisham\u00a0<\/strong>represented Chelsea Piers<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>Cougar Aquatic Team touched third in 1:39.41 with the squad of\u00a0<strong>Joseph Scerbo<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Zachary Valenzuela<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chris Balbo<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Patrick Collins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In non-Olympic event distance action,\u00a0<strong>Natalie Ward\u00a0<\/strong>of Berkeley won the women&#8217;s 1500 in 17:04.74. Her teammates\u00a0<strong>Erica Wirth\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Christina Barrett\u00a0<\/strong>touched second and third in 17:19.68 and 17:21.02. \u00a0Upper Valley&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kristian Hansen\u00a0<\/strong>claimed the men&#8217;s 800 in 8:30.77. Asphalt Green&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Aaron Glas\u00a0<\/strong>touched second in 8:35.20, just ahead of Scarlet Aquatic&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jackson Karofsky\u00a0<\/strong>in 8:36.75.<\/p>\n<p>Scarlet Aquatics&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Matea Samardzic\u00a0<\/strong>continued her string of podium finishes, winning the 200 backstroke well under the Trials standard, though just off her best time, with a 2:12.39. Ridgefield&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marcella Maguire\u00a0<\/strong>was second in 2:17.23. Asphalt Green&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Isabel Gormley\u00a0<\/strong>finished third with a 2:19.01.\u00a0Samardzic later won the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.87 while Victor Swim Club&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Makayla Sargent\u00a0<\/strong>was second in 2:17.51. Both swimmers were under the Trials standard which they had previously achieved.\u00a0<strong>Miku Takabayashi\u00a0<\/strong>of Blue Devil Aquatics was third in 2:20.17.<\/p>\n<p>Ridgefield&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kieran Smith\u00a0<\/strong>won the men&#8217;s 200 backstroke in a 2:04.55. Wilton YMCA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>John Kealy\u00a0<\/strong>finished second in 2:07.32 and Patriot Swim Club&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrew Carbone\u00a0<\/strong>was third with a 2:08.28. Smith later finished second in the\u00a0200 IM\u00a0in 2:06.85 as\u00a0Scarlet&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jonathan Gomez<\/strong>\u00a0won the event in 2:05.51. Scerbo finished third in 2:07.88.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ky-lee Perry\u00a0<\/strong>of the Wilton YMCA was first to the wall in the women&#8217;s 100 freestyle with a 56.64. O&#8217;Mara touched second in 57.70 while Lara rounded out the top three in 58.09.<\/p>\n<p>Swimmin&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Drew Modrov\u00a0<\/strong>touched first in the men&#8217;s 100 freestyle, stopping the clock at 50.84.\u00a0<strong>John Montesi\u00a0<\/strong>of Chelsea Piers\u00a0was second in 51.35 and Wilton YMCA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hugo Sykes\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in 51.46.<\/p>\n<p>In the 400 medley relay, Lara, Aarts, and Grier combined with\u00a0<strong>Carly Fried\u00a0<\/strong>to win in 4:23.92 for Asphalt Green. Their B team of\u00a0<strong>Luiza Silveria<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sophia Zhang<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Isabel Gormley<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Charlotte Krevitt\u00a0<\/strong>were third with a 4:24.40. Scarlet Aquatics&#8217; Samardzic,\u00a0<strong>Gabriella Baratta<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Valentaina Gomez<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Emily Gorham\u00a0<\/strong>touched second in 4:24.21.<\/p>\n<p>Scarlet won the men&#8217;s medley with\u00a0<strong>Leighton Mayers<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Eric Materniak<\/strong>, Gomez<strong>,<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Eric Wong\u00a0<\/strong>in 4:00.53. Berkeley&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kevin Flynn\u00a0<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Peter Shepanzyk<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Brennan Hammond<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Brendan Koziol\u00a0<\/strong>were second with a 4:04.52. Adirondak Bluefins finished third in 4:05.97 with the team of\u00a0<strong>Liam Picozzi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ryan Board<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Timothy Maggs<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Everett McNair<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Scarlet Aquatics dominated the men&#8217;s scoring with 615 points while Cougar Aquatic Team was second with 321 points. On the women&#8217;s side, Asphalt Green finished with 561.5 points to Berkeley Aquatic Club&#8217;s 491 points.<\/p>\n<p>Full results available on Meet
