{"id":193225,"date":"2016-04-03T09:36:08","date_gmt":"2016-04-03T16:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=193225"},"modified":"2016-04-03T09:56:34","modified_gmt":"2016-04-03T16:56:34","slug":"defending-olympic-champion-florent-manaudou-blasts-21-42-in-50-free-in-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/defending-olympic-champion-florent-manaudou-blasts-21-42-in-50-free-in-france\/","title":{"rendered":"Defending Olympic Champion Florent Manaudou Blasts 21.42 in 50 Free in France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Florent Manaudou<\/strong> posted a top-ranked time of 21.42 in the men&#8217;s 50-meter free at the 2016 French Open Championships.<\/p>\n<p>That means the defending Olympic champion in the event will go to the 2016 Rio Olympics for France in the event. \u00a0Defending Olympic champions have not been having a great time of it so far during the Trials process with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/race-video-watch-controversial-yannick-agnel-200-free-from-france\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yannick Agnel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/defending-400-im-olympic-champion-ye-shiwen-finishes-7th-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ye Shiwen<\/a> two of the most notable misses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fred Bousquet<\/strong> finished second in 22.09 to move up to eighth in the world, while <strong>Clement Mignon<\/strong> took third in 22.22.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeremy Stravius<\/strong> clinched another European Championships\u00a0swim with a 51.66 in the men&#8217;s 100-meter fly at the 2016 French Open Championships.<\/p>\n<p>That swim shot him to third in the world behind only <strong>Konrad Czerniak<\/strong> (51.31) and<strong> Laszlo Cseh<\/strong> (51.40). \u00a0Stravius already won the 100 free (47.97) and 200 free (1:46.18) earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mehdy Metella<\/strong>\u00a0claimed a spot on the European Championships\u00a0roster in the event, according to the FFN, with a second-place 51.84. \u00a0That swim put him fourth in the world behind Stravius. <strong>\u00a0Michael Phelps<\/strong> (51.94) and <strong>Li Zhuhao<\/strong> (51.97) are the only other swimmers under 52 seconds. \u00a0<strong>Joeri Verlinden<\/strong> placed third in 52.57.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Camille Gheorghiu<\/strong> raced her way to a spot on the French European Championships\u00a0team in the women&#8217;s 200-meter back with a 2:12.14. The French Swimming Federation confirmed the berth on Twitter shortly after the race. \u00a0<strong>Fantine Lesaffre<\/strong> placed second in 2:14.01 with <strong>Pauline Mahieu<\/strong> earning third in 2:14.97.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charlotte Bonnet<\/strong> raced her way to another Montpellier\u00a0berth with a 53.93 in the women&#8217;s 100-meter free. \u00a0That swim pushed her up to ninth in the world rankings, and cleared France&#8217;s selection requirements according to the FFN&#8217;s Twitter account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beryl Gastaldello<\/strong> also earned a European spot with a 54.10 for second in the women&#8217;s 100-meter free. \u00a0<strong>Mathilde Cini<\/strong> (54.454) and <strong>Anna Santamans<\/strong> (55.11) placed third and fourth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fanny Deberghes<\/strong> topped the women&#8217;s 50-meter breast in 31.97, while<strong> Adeline Williams<\/strong> (32.23) and <strong>Solene Gallego<\/strong> (32.45) picked up second and third.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Giacomo Perez Dortona<\/strong> hit the wall in 27.78 to win the men&#8217;s 50-meter breast. \u00a0<strong>Thomas Dahlia<\/strong> (28.30) and <strong>Thibaut Capitaine<\/strong> (28.44) rounded out the top three.<\/p>\n<p>France will announce its full Olympic roster following the meet, since it has multiple levels of selection requirements above and beyond just the FINA A cut standards.<\/p>\n<p>More to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florent Manaudou posted a top-ranked time of 21.42 in the men&#8217;s 50-meter free at the 2016 French Open Championships.
