WASHINGTON, D.C., October 26. THE GW men's and women's swimming teams combined to post a 3-1 record in its three-way meet with Georgetown and Providence Saturday at GW's Yates Field House. The GW men routed Providence, 187-99, but lost to the host Hoyas, 160-133, while the GW women crushed Providence, 197-86, and edged Georgetown, 150-143. <\/p>\n
The GW women won eight races including the 400-yard medley relay in the time of 4:02.67. The relay team consisted of Isabel Tawney, Lauren Fuchs, Sarah Beggs and Jessica Miga. Tawney picked up two more wins in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke while Miga won the 50 yard freestyle and Fuchs captured the 100-yard backstroke. Freshman Kayla Jensen also was a double winner in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle. <\/p>\n
Sarah Beggs was second in the 100 butterfly but finished with a career-best time of :59.28. Fred Schneider was third in the 1,000 yd freestyle and was six seconds faster than last year. Emily Leik was second in the 200 IM but was within a second of her time at the A-10 Championships. <\/p>\n
"The kids really stepped up to the competition today and had some great performances," GW head coach Dan Rhinehart said. "It was great to see how they all supported each other. We knew going into the meet that every swim was going to be important and they all let their teammates know they were behind them 100 percent. The enthusiasm was contagious. Even going beyond our first-place finishes, we were coming on strong to finish second and put up some really good times." <\/p>\n
Rhinehart added, "Swimming this well, this early in the season, can only lead to faster swims at the end of the year." <\/p>\n
GW next swims Saturday, Nov. 1, at La Salle in a dual meet beginning at 2:00 p.m. <\/p>\n
