FOR the second night in a row, a title trifecta was one-upped by a sprint world record for top billing at the FINA World Cup stop held in Sydney, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>While both Kathryn Meaklim of South Africa and Ous Mellouli of Tunisia were amassing the first-place prize money with triple wins on the night, Robert Hurley of Australia provided the big fireworks with a global standard in the 50 back.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 1500 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nOlympic gold medalist Ous Mellouli of Tunisia held off a hard-charging Cameron Smith of Australia, 15:06.23 to 15:06.71, for the distance free gold \u2013 his fourth win of the meet.  Matt Woodrow of New Zealand took third in 15:06.97.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nWorld Cup points leader Marieke Guehrer of Australia sprinted to her second title of the meet with a time of 53.15.  Compatriot Cate Campbell took silver in 53.27, while Sweden&#39;s Sarah Sjostrom placed third in 54.21.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nFor the third meet in a row, Ous Mellouli of Tunisia pulled off the difficult 200-1500 free double with a winning time of 1:43.05 for his fifth triumph of the meet.  New Zealand&#39;s Michael Jack touched second in 1:45.15, while Australia&#39;s Ryan Napolean finished third in 1:45.43.  Jack&#39;s time cleared the New Zealand standard of 1:45.23 set by Danyon Loader in 1995.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nAn Aussie trio swept the podium in the sprint breast.  Jade Edimstone triumphed with a time of 30.43, while Sarah Katsoulis (30.65) and Kristy Morrison (30.88) took second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nWorld Cup points leader Christian Sprenger of Australia won his third title of the meet with a time of 58.47.  New Zealand&#39;s Glenn Snyders took second in 59.42, while Australia&#39;s Brenton Rickard placed third in 59.63.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Kathryn Meaklim gathered her third crown of the meet with a time of 4:31.52 in the distance medley. Australia&#39;s Ellen Fullerton finished second in 4:34.18, while teammate Jackie Staples touched third in 4:40.64.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nIt might not have been in world-record fashion like his 50 fly win, but Australia&#39;s Matt Jaukovic collected the 100-meter win in 50.50.  Compatriots Chris Wright (50.96) and Garth Kates (51.70) earned the rest of the podium prize money in the event.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Emily Seebohm just missed the national record of 57.83 set by Rachel Goh at short course Worlds this year, but still wound up with a stellar time of 57.91 for the win.  Teammate Belinda Hocking placed second in 58.69, while Brazil&#39;s Fabiola Molina finished third in 59.09.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nRobert Hurley, swimming for host country Australia, nipped Thomas Rupprath&#39;s world record of 23.27 set in 2004 by clocking a scintillating time of 23.24.  Incidentally, the time also cleared Randall Bal&#39;s World Cup record of 23.33 set in Berlin last year and Matt Welsh&#39;s Australian record of 23.31 set in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#39;s Stanislav Donets placed second in 23.63, while Ashley Delaney of Australia took third in 24.04.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Kathryn Meaklim doubled up on the day for her fourth title of the meet with a time of 2:08.85 \u2013 easily out-distancing Australia&#39;s Jackie Staples (2:10.55) for the win.  Australia&#39;s Jessica Ash completed the top three in 2:11.29.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nOus Mellouli continued on his title tear with his second daily trifecta in a row.  This time he walked away with his sixth crown of the meet in 1:56.30.  Australia&#39;s Leith Brodie placed second in 1:56.33, while Brazil&#39;s Tales Cerdeira finished third in 1:58.86.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 400 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nNew Zealand&#39;s Melissa Ingram beat Helen Norfolk&#39;s national record of 4:04.51 set at short course Worlds this year by claiming the middle distance title tonight in 4:03.31.  Bronte Barratt of Australia took second in 4:04.81, while teammate Ellen Fullerton placed third in 4:05.33.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nKyle Richardson of Australia gave Eamon Sullivan&#39;s national record of 21.31 a run, but settled for first-place prize money in 21.45.  Compatriot Matthew Abood placed second in 21.92, while Sweden&#39;s Stefan Nystrand collected third in 22.00.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Kathryn Meaklim claimed her third title of the day and fifth of the meet with a touch-out triumph over Sweden&#39;s Joline Hostman, 2:23.86 to 2:23.99.  Sarah Katsoulis of Australia finished third in 2:24.75.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 IM<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia swept another podium, this time in the sprint medley.  Emily Seebohm captured her third crown of the meet with a time of 1:00.39, while teammates Alicia Coutts (1:01.00) and Ellen Fullerton (1:01.56) rounded out the top three.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nIt might not have been a world record like his sprint back, but Robert Hurley pocketed some more prize money with a victorious time of 1:52.39 in the 200-meter event.  Teammate Ashley Delaney finished second in 1:52.86, while Russia&#39;s Stanislav Donets took third in 1:53.35.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nMarieke Guehrer won her third title of the meet and just missed Felicity Galvez&#39;s world record of 25.32 by topping the sprint fly in 25.46.
