LOS ANGELES, California, October 25. USC men's swimming and diving team has started off the 2008-2009 season with a victory, beating Notre Dame 159.5 to 126.5 in a dual meet on Saturday (Oct. 25) at McDonald's Swim Stadium. <\/p>\n
The Trojans placed first in 12 of the 16 meet events and were dominant in the 50y free, sweeping the top three positions. Sophomore Buddy Turner clocked in first (20.93), freshman Jeff Daniels came in second (21.26) and senior Kevin Bartell rounded out the top three (21.44). <\/p>\n
USC was led by junior Zoltan Povazsay, who finished first in the 500y free (4:31.48), and tied for first in the 200y free with Notre Dame's John Lytle (1:39.88). Povazsay represented his native Hungary in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. <\/p>\n
USC's other current Olympian, senior Ankur Poseria who represented India, turned out a first place win in the 100y fly (50.37) and finished third in the 100y backstroke (52.28), behind USC freshman T.J. Auner who took first. <\/p>\n
In the 1000y free, senior Evan Marcus finished first (9:29.67) and freshman Colin Heinrich finished second (9:32.23). <\/p>\n
Senior Kazu Miyahara led a 1-2-3 finish for the Trojans, in the 100y breast finishing first (57.80), followed by Bartell (58.50) and freshman Will Orlady (58.58). Orlady also finished third in the 200y breast at a time of 2:07.15, behind sophomore Dillon Connolly (2:05.15) and Notre Dame's Daniel Rave (2:08.94). <\/p>\n
The Trojans took first and second in the 200y medley relay, with the "A" team finishing first (1:33.51) and the "B" team taking second (1:34.06). <\/p>\n
In 1m diving USC sophomore Steven Starks, took first (345.00) and freshman Harrison Jones finished next (342.45). Jones also led the Trojans in 3m diving, finishing first (369.97) and Starks took third (339.97). <\/p>\n
This win puts USC at 1-0 on the season and Notre Dame at 0-1 in dual meets. Next up for the Trojans is a meet against Arizona on Nov. 14 at McDonald's Swim Stadium. <\/p>\n
