GREEN BAY, Wisconsin, October 25. THE Cleveland State men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Green Bay Saturday, splitting their meets with Wisconsin-Green Bay. The men left Green Bay with a 145.5 to 95.5 win, taking all but one event on the day and moving one athlete into the school's all-time Top-10 list, while the women won two events en route to a 158-72 loss. <\/p>\n
"It was our first meet of the year for the men and we won every event except the 200 freestyle," head coach Wally Morton said. "The men performed well and raced a very good Green Bay team. But the story of the meet was freshman Mark deSwardt who won three individual events, just missed a Green Bay pool record and on only 15 minutes rest out-sprinted the defending conference champion in the 500 freestyle." <\/p>\n
The individual events opened with deSwardt's win in the 1,000 freestyle. His time of 9:27.23 is the fourth-fastest time in CSU history and just off Green Bay pool record pace. Teammate Pieter Ritz finished second in 10:11.32. Later in the day, deSwardt swam a 1:55.35 to beat teammate Zvonimir Androic and win the 200 butterfly. Less than 15 minutes later, he got back in the pool to swim the 500 freestyle, out-sprinting the league's defending champion in the final moment to win in 4:36.78. <\/p>\n
Stephen Grove held off teammate Mike Marsico to win the 50 freestyle (21.43) and two-time NCAA qualifier Jakub Dobies won the 200 IM in 1:57.87. A 2008 Summer Olympian, Nedim Nisic won the 100 freestyle in 47.53, the Vikings also picked up a win in the 200 backstroke by Androic (1:56.99). <\/p>\n
CSU finished 1-2-3 in the 200 breastroke with Marko Milenkovic (2:07.58) edging out Dobies and Deni Gasparin, respectively. Todd Winchell earned a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle (1:45.03). <\/p>\n
In the relays, CSU opened the meet in the 400 medley relay, winning by five seconds (3:30.19), and also won the day's final event, the 400 freestyle relay, by more than two seconds (3:09.04). <\/p>\n
In the first diving events of his career, Matt DiMasso took fourth in the 1-meter event (210.08) and third in the 3-meter event (190.95). <\/p>\n
The Viking men return to action on Friday, Oct. 31 when they host Butler and Canisius. The meet begins at 5 p.m. in the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Viking women picked up two wins and another all-time Top-10 finish on the day, but lost their meet 158-72. <\/p>\n
"The women did their best to swim fast after a long bus trip and I was very proud of their effort, their focus and their will to win," head coach Wally Morton said. "There are a lot of reasons to feel good about their efforts and their performances." <\/p>\n
Carys Behn picked up both of the Vikings' wins on the day in the 100 freestyle (53.79) and 200 freestyle (1:55.12) events. It was the first time this season that she swam the 100 freestyle for CSU. <\/p>\n
Behn also swam the seventh-fastest 100 freestyle time in school history (53.52) in the leadoff leg of the 400 freestyle relay and is now listed among CSU's all-time Top-10 in four different events. <\/p>\n
Runner-up finishes went to Emily Splain in the 50 freestyle (25.92), Katie Bellew in the 200 butterfly (2:14.39), Whitney Hickey in the 200 backstroke (2:14.19) and Frances Carrion in the 500 freestyle (5:27.46). <\/p>\n
In the first diving events of her career, Kacey Cummings took second in both the 1-meter (220.12) and 3-meter events (224.48). <\/p>\n
"We are very pleased with Kacey's performance in the dives," Morton said. "She's making terrific strides in her diving as she progresses." <\/p>\n
