UP until the final swim of the evening, Tunisia&#39;s Ous Mellouli had top billing in the bag at the third stop of the FINA World Cup in Sydney, Australia. <\/p>\n<p>Throughout the evening, Mellouli walked away with top prize money with a title trifecta.<\/p>\n<p>That all changed, however, when Matt Jaukovic of Australia stepped to the blocks in the men&#39;s 50 fly.  Less than 23 seconds later, Jaukovic was the newest world-record holder in the sport.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 800 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Kathryn Meaklim topped the distance freestyle event with a time of 8:32.62, while Australia&#39;s Luane Rowe placed second in 8:35.44.  New Zealand&#39;s Charlotte Webby completed the podium with a time of 8:45.40.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nWorld-record holder Stefan Nystrand of Sweden cruised to the gold with a time of 47.45, off his world record of 45.83 set during the World Cup last year.  Meanwhile, Australia&#39;s Tommaso D&#39;Orsogna took second in 48.36 and Mitchell Patterson finished third in 48.39.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nAustralian youngster Ellen Fullerton blistered the 200 free with a winning time of 1:56.35, while New Zealand&#39;s Melissa Ingram snagged second in 1:57.28.  Australia&#39;s Bronte Barratt rounded out the top three in 1:57.52.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Christian Sprenger gave the home crowd something to cheer for as he took a run at the national record in the sprint breast.  He came up just short of Brenton Rickard&#39;s 26.62 set in April with a time of 26.93.  Rickard came in second with a time of 27.19, while South Africa&#39;s William Diering touched third in 27.72.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Sarah Katsoulis captured the top prize money with a time of 1:05.79, while Sweden&#39;s Joline Hostman touched second in 1:06.58.  Australia&#39;s Samantha Marshall placed third in 1:06.67. <\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 IM<\/b><br \/>\nTunisia&#39;s Ous Mellouli demolished the field in the distance medley with a time of 4:06.47.  Australia&#39;s Stephen Parkes was his closest competition with a second-place 4:14.21, while teammate Nick Cordner finished third in 4:14.36.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\n2008 World Cup points leader Marieke Guehrer of Australia went after the World Cup record in the event, but fell shy with a time of 56.88.  Natalie Coughlin set the standard with a 56.34 back in 2002.  Sweden&#39;s Sarah Sjostrom finished second in 57.52, while Brazil&#39;s Daynara De Paula placed third in 58.76.  Sjostrom&#39;s time beat the Swedish record of 57.66 set by Johanna Sjoberg in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nRussia&#39;s Stanislav Donets held off a hard-charging Robert Hurley of Australia, 50.75 to 50.82, for the 100 back title.  Ashley Delaney of Australia made up the rest of the podium with a third-place 51.05.  Donets and Hurley just missed their respective country&#39;s national records of 50.53 and 50.71.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Emily Seebohm blazed to the win with a time of 27.21 in the sprint back event.  Brazil&#39;s Fabiola Molina came in second with a readout of 27.38, while Australia&#39;s Amy Cockerton finished third in 27.60.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nIn an exciting finish, Australians Chris Wright and Nick D&#39;Arcy posted matching times of 1:53.37 to win the distance fly event.  Compatriot Lachlan Staples completed the top three in 1:53.61.  All three swimmers eclipsed the Australian record of 1:53.85 set by Andrew Richards in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Kathryn Meaklim edged Australia&#39;s Ellen Fullerton for the 200 IM crown, 2:10.03 to 2:10.52, with a powerful back half.  New Zealand&#39;s Natalie Wiegersma wound up third in 2:12.23.  Meaklim cleared Mandy Loots&#39; national record of 2:10.97 from 2007 en route to her second win of the evening.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nOlympic gold medalist Ous Mellouli doubled up on the night with a triumph in the 400 free when he clocked a 3:40.49.  Australia&#39;s Robert Hurley hit the wall second in 3:43.41, while compatriot Ryan Napolean completed the podium in 3:45.17.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nCate Campbell clipped 24 seconds to win the women&#39;s splash-and-dash in 23.97.  Teammate Marieke Guehrer completed the sprint in 24.62, while Sweden&#39;s Claire Hedenskog took third in 24.70.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nAustralia&#39;s Christian Sprenger won for the second time during the evening with a time of 2:06.43, easily out-distancing South Africa&#39;s William Diering (2:09.70) and Australia&#39;s Craig Calder (2:10.11) \u2013 the other two podium finishers.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 IM<\/b><br \/>\nTunisia&#39;s Ous Mellouli grabbed his third win of the night with a time of 53.84 in the sprint medley.  Australia&#39;s Leith Brodie (54.30) and Kyle Richardson (54.52) made up the rest of the top three.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nNew Zealand&#39;s Melissa Ingram eased through the 200 back en route to gold in 2:04.75.  She defeated second-place Melissa Corfe of South Africa by more than three seconds as Hocking touched in 2:07.89.  Australia&#39;s Belinda Hocking finished third in 2:07.90.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nThe third stop of the FINA World Cup finally featured what everyone had been waiting for, a short course meter world record.  Matt Jaukovic gave the home crowd a show with a scintillating time of 22.50.
