This was one of the most incredible men\u2019s NCAA meets we have ever seen, with a staggering <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ten <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCAA records. <\/span><b>Ryan Murphy, Caeleb Dressel, Will Licon, Joseph Schooling <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Jack Conger (<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to name just a few) all had amazing, record-breaking meets that stamped their names on the record books and put them more in the spotlight heading into the Olympic summer. But of all the amazing performances this week, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/townley-haas-impresses-and-excites-imaginations-at-mens-ncaa-championships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most awe-inspiring (and arguably the most historic) came from <\/span><b>Townley Haas, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a freshman from the University of Texas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Haas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">started off the meet with a monster swim that suggested he may be able to challenge the oldest record on the books: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mens-ncaa-div-i-championships-finals-burnett-swims-fastest-ever-200-freestyle-131-20\/\"><b>Simon Burnett\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1:31.20 that has stood as the fastest ever since 2006<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and was also recorded in the same Atlanta pool). Swimming the second leg of the 800 free relay on the first night, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/townley-haas-sizzles-with-130-52-split-in-800-free-relay\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the freshman merely recorded the fastest relay split in history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dropping a 1:30.52 that clipped <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/speedo-performance-of-the-week-michael-wynalda-amazes-in-relay-split\/\"><b>Michael Wynalda\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1:30.60 from 2014 NCAA\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With all eyes on him in the individual final of the 200 freestyle, <\/span><b>Haas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delivered. Going out in a monstrous 43.61 (20.90, 22.71), <\/span><b>Haas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came back in 46.85 (23.31, 23.54) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/texas-townley-haas-crushes-200-free-ncaa-american-record-with-130-46\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to touch in a record-setting 1:30.46<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That broke fellow Longhorn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ricky-berens-posts-unorthodox-american-record\/\"><b>Ricky Berens&#8217;\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Burnett\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCAA record, and made <\/span><b>Haas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first man under 1:31 by over half a second.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to his young swimmer\u2019s accomplishment, <\/span><b>Eddie Reese <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joked that his swim showed \u201c[That] his 500 wasn\u2019t very good,\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/townley-haas-vaults-5th-time-500-free-409-00\/\"><b>Haas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won the 500 on the first night of the meet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) before predicting that <\/span><b>Haas\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best swims lay ahead of him this summer, adding \u201cthere are a lot of people around the country that decided they were gonna practice a lot harder tomorrow morning because of what he did tonight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulations <\/span><b>Townley Haas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on earning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming World\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performance of the Week!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To be honest, this week was just plain unfair.
