TALLAHASSEE, Florida. October 18. THE Florida State swimming and diving team swept ACC Rival Georgia Tech at the Morcom Aquatic Center. The men won 164-135 while the women were victorious by a score of 193.5-103.5.<\/p>\n
"It was a great meet from top to bottom," FSU head coach Neil Harper said. "I'm glad that we swam well at home. We showed a lot of heart today and I was excited about how we supported each other."<\/p>\n
The Seminole men (3-0, 1-0) were led by the performance of junior diver Terry Horner who scored 402.83 points on the three-meter, his second highest score during collegiate competition. Horner also led a 1-2-3 finish on the one-meter with a score of 339.23. Senior Scott Derner turned in a pair of second-place finishes for FSU.<\/p>\n
"On three-meter I got really pumped up," Horner said. "I was really happy with the way I dove, going over 400 points this early in the season is definitely a step up for me."<\/p>\n
In the pool, the FSU distance trio of redshirt senior Kyle Young (first), junior Nick Graves (second) and sophomore Ian Rowe (third) turned in a pair of 1-2-3 finishes in the 1000 free and 500 free to lead the team. Redshirt senior Jarryd Botha and junior Andy Hodgson also won a pair of races for the Seminoles with Botha taking home the 100 back (49.95) and 100 fly (50.12) and Hodgson winning the 200 free (1:39.41) and 200 back (1:49.95).<\/p>\n
"I think it is good to know that is a possibility for our distance swimmers," Harper said. "Those are some of our hardest working guys and it's nice to be able to get that, but we can't take it for granted because of how hard they train which gives them every reason to be tired."<\/p>\n
The Florida State women (5-1, 2-0) were paced by three multi-event winners, senior Georgia Holderness, sophomore Jocelyn Phillips and freshman Stephanie Sarandos. Holderness swept the breaststroke events winning both the 100 (1:05.43) and 200 (2:19.05), Phillips took home wins in the 200 free (1:50.99) and 500 free (4:57.51) and Sarandos swept the 100 back (57.27) and 200 back (2:02.96). The Seminoles also showed their depth by bringing home 10 second-place performances.<\/p>\n
"We've got individuals stepping up and winning events, but at the same time we've got people coming through to take home seconds, thirds and fourths," Harper said. "We're going to win more meets when our depth is earning points and that's what we did today."<\/p>\n
In diving sophomore Katherine Adham won the one-meter (266.40) and junior Katie Sirounis won the three-meter (300.45) to sweep diving. FSU also took home three of the top four spots on all three boards.<\/p>\n
"I was really pleased this week, we were a lot better than last week," FSU diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. "The girls performed a lot better and I think we did a really good job to get them to focus on what they were doing."<\/p>\n
