Last year, Texas finally won its first 500 free title in program history. This year, the Longhorns defended that title with a win from Townley Haas<\/strong> at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.<\/p>\n

With defending champion Clark Smith<\/strong> finishing a surprising 21st this morning<\/a>, freshman Haas had to step up big to keep the title in Austin. Out under American record pace through the first half of the race, Haas settled for the sixth-fastest time ever as he moved to fifth all-time in the event’s history with a 4:09.00.<\/p>\n

Florida’s Mitch D’Arrigo<\/strong>, meanwhile, gave Haas all he could handle with a 4:09.98 for second. \u00a0That moved D’Arrigo up from 15th to ninth all time in the event’s history.<\/p>\n

Southern California’s Reed Malone<\/strong> clinched third overall in 4:12.55.<\/p>\n
