AFTER a strong morning of finals action at the FINA World Cup held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, swimmers were back in action for evening preliminary action.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 1500 freestyle slower seeds<\/b><br \/>\nA trio of Brazilians competed in the slower heat of the metric mile.  Lucas Azevedo (15:26.50), Leonardo De Deus (15:32.80) and Luiz Felipe Pires (15:43.80) completed the earlier race.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nBrooke Bishop of the U.S. ripped off a time of 54.41 to lead the preliminary round.  Will she have enough in the tank tomorrow to scare Dara Torres&#39; American record of 52.79?  Sweden&#39;s Josefin Lillhage took second in 55.43, while Australia&#39;s Marieke Guehrer placed third in 55.46.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#39;s Kira Volodina (55.87), Brazil&#39;s Tatiana Lemos-Barbosa (56.25), Brazil&#39;s Juliana Kury (56.37), Brazil&#39;s Ana Carolina Santos (57.53) and Brazil&#39;s Roberta Albino (57.72) made up the rest of the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nOlympic gold medalist Ous Mellouli of Tunisia topped qualifying in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.19.  Australia&#39;s Kyle Richardson (1:48.55) and Germany&#39;s Lucien Hassdenteufel (1:48.88) joined him in the 1:48 range.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#39;s Marcus Botega (1:49.75) and Rodrigo Castro (1:49.86) took fourth and fifth, while South Africa&#39;s Sebastien Rousseau (1:49.94) and Brazil&#39;s Joao De Lucca (1:50.04) finished sixth and seventh.  Argentina&#39;s Damian Roth placed eighth in 1:50.38.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nTara Kirk of the U.S. finished just a second shy of Jessica Hardy&#39;s World and American record of 29.58.  Kirk led the preliminary round with a time of 30.86.  Sweden&#39;s Rebecca Ejdervik placed second in 31.63, while Russia&#39;s Valentina Artemyeva finished third in 31.64.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilians Juliana Kury (32.13), Tatiane Sakemi (32.25), Alessandra Marchioro (32.34), Mariana Katsuno (32.67) and Ana Carla Carvalho (33.36) completed the rest of the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nBrazil went 1-2 in the 100 breast as Eduardo Fischer touched in 1:00.54 and Felipe Lima took second in 1:00.62.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#39;s Christian Sprenger will look to sweep the breaststroke events in the morning after posting a third-seed 1:01.09.  Brazil&#39;s Felipe Silva (1:01.17) and Alan Nagaoka (1:01.40) finished fourth and fifth.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#39;s Thabang Moeketsane placed sixth in 1:01.48, while Brazil&#39;s Thiago Parravicini (1:01.68) and Itamar Schmitz (1:01.76) completed the finale field.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nEvgeny Korotyshkin of Russia paced the preliminary round with a time of 51.74, while Brazil&#39;s Candido Silva Junior (52.89) and Thiago Pereira (53.22) made up the top three.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#39;s Sebastien Rousseau placed fourth in 53.65, while Brazil&#39;s Gabriel Mangabeira (53.85), Thiago Sickert (54.46), Guilherme Santos (54.49) and Bruno Paula (54.54) concluded the championship eight.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Chanelle Van Wyk claimed lane four out of the 100 back preliminary round with a time of 1:02.13.  Colombia&#39;s Carolina Henao placed second in 1:02.30, while Brazil&#39;s Fernanda Alvarenga (1:02.62) and Fabiola Molina (1:03.41) touched third and fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#39;s Sophie Edington finished fifth in 1:03.57, while Brazil&#39;s Juliana Kury (1:03.73) and Singapore&#39;s Lynette Ng (1:04.35) took sixth and seventh.  Brazil&#39;s Etiene Medeiros (1:04.43) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nBrazil&#39;s Henrique Rodrigues led the way in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.33.  Teammate Thiago Pereira finished second in 2:02.36, while another Brazilian Thiago Simon took third in 2:03.17.<\/p>\n<p>Tunisia&#39;s Ous Mellouli finished fourth in 2:04.21, while Brazil&#39;s Alan Nagaoka (2:04.72), Renato Barufi (2:04.92), Tales Cerdeira (2:05.14) and Mauricio Torres (2:05.21) touched fifth through eighth.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nOlympic gold medalist Cesar Cielo took a run at Nicholas Santos&#39; Brazilian record of 21.32 with a 21.58.  Sweden&#39;s Stefan Nystrand touched second in 21.76, while Santos finished third in 22.14.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#39;s Kyle Richardson placed fourth in 22.23, while Brazil&#39;s Daniel Orzechowski (22.29), Guilherme Santos (22.31) and Arthur Rocha (22.39) finished fifth through seventh.  Argentina&#39;s Lucas Piccolo placed eighth in 22.44.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nAmerican Tara Kirk led another preliminary, this time with a clocking of 2:31.68.  Russia&#39;s Valentina Artemyeva finished second in 2:32.05, while Brazil&#39;s Thamy Ventorin took third in 2:32.23.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the top eight spots also went to Brazilians Tatiane Sakemi (2:34.32), Michele Schmidt (2:36.21), Mariana Katsuno (2:36.73), Renata Sander (2:38.63) and Bianca Freitas (2:38.72).<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 IM<\/b><br \/>\nSouth Africa&#39;s Mandy Loots paced prelims with a time of 1:03.20, while Brazil&#39;s Joanna Maranhao-Melo took second in 1:03.58.  Sweden&#39;s Josefin Lillhage (1:03.70) placed third.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#39;s Marieke Guehrer (1:03.80) and Brazil&#39;s Fabiola Molina (1:04.25), Eloisa Bassani (1:05.32), Juliana Kury (1:05.90) and Roberta Albino (1:07.01) claimed the final transfer spots.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 backstroke<\/b><br \/>\nRussia&#39;s Stanislav Donets led the way with a time of 2:01.57, while Brazil&#39;s Leonardo De Deus took second in 2:02.51.  Germany&#39;s Lucian Hassdenteufel earned third in 2:03.45, while Randall Bal of the U.S. placed fourth in 2:03.74.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#39;s Leonardo Guedes (2:05.22), Fabio Santi (2:06.34), Henrique Rodrigues (2:06.40) and Lucas Fragoso (2:08.51) made up the rest of the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nBrazil&#39;s Daynara De Paula beat her national record of 26.94 from May with a time of 26.66 to grab the top seed.  Brooke Bishop of the U.S. qualified second in 26.69, while Australia&#39;s Marieke Guehrer placed third in 26.85.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden&#39;s Therese Alshammar (27.54), Brazil&#39;s Etiene Medeiros (27.62) and Colombia&#39;s Carolina Henao (27.64) touched fourth through sixth.
