OXFORD, Ohio, October 11. MIAMI University's men's swimming and diving team opened the 2008-09 season with a 148-84 win over the Evansville Purple Aces. The RedHawks took 10 of the 13 events en route to the season-opening win. <\/p>\n
Miami took the top two spots in first event of the 200-yard medley relay; freshmen Chris Gunnels and Mark Healey captured their first win as RedHawks with the help of sophomores Jason Hass and Ryan Neff with a time of 1:38.04. Coming in second was the relay team made up of Matt Grubb, Robert Mello, Brooks Cowan, and Brendan Melling with a time of 1:39.71. Miami's 200-yard freestyle relay team-Trevor Tilly, Darin Smith, Jason Hass, and John Eick- also took the top spot with a time of 1:31.17. <\/p>\n
Gunnels also placed first in the 100-yard freestyle (0:47.16) and in the 400-yard individual medley (4:12.89). Healey had the top time in the 50-yard freestyle (0:21.96), while sophomore Lenny Wanta finished third. Melling had a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. Jason Hass touched the wall first with a time of 1:59.47 in the 200-yard backstroke with junior Michael Carroll finishing third <\/p>\n
The RedHawks posted one-two finishes in the 200 yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle. Darin Smith touched the wall in 1:46.36 to finish first in the 200 free, and Scott DuCharme placed second (1:48.28). In the 200 fly, Jason Bank finished first with a time of 2:00.34, and Brooks Cowan posted a second-place finish in 2:05.31. Rob Jackson and Trevor Tilly recorded one-two finishes, respectively, in the 500 free. Jackson won the event in a time of 4:54.36. <\/p>\n
Senior Andy Neff recorded a third-place finish in the 1000-yard free. Freshman David Mead took third in the 100-yard freestyle, while Ryan Neff had a third-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley. <\/p>\n
Freshmen divers Cameron Horner and Jimmy Beres made their debut with respective first- and second-place finishes in the one-meter dive. <\/p>\n
Miami's (1-0) next meet will be on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. when the RedHawks welcome the Xavier Musketeers to the Nixon Aquatic Center. <\/p>\n
