Indiana’s Lilly King<\/strong> destroyed another barrier as she broke through 2:04 to win the women’s 200-yard breast at the 2016 NCAA Division I Women’s Championships.<\/p>\n

After already being the first swimmer in history to break 57 seconds in the 100-yard breast<\/a>, King chopped half-a-second off the 2:04 barrier in the 200-yard event with a 2:03.59.<\/p>\n

That time blasted the previous NCAA, U.S. Open and American record of 2:04.06 set by Notre Dame’s Emma Reaney<\/strong> back in 2014 for the Irish’s first NCAA title.<\/p>\n

King made history by becoming Indiana\u2019s first multiple event and multiple NCAA titlist. IU has had several individual champions, but none have won more than a single title or won them in different events.<\/p>\n

King downed her roommate and teammate Miranda Tucker<\/strong> (2:06.27) by 2.68 seconds for a dominant victory, but that’s not the biggest margin of victory in an NCAA 200 breast. \u00a0Jeanne Childs<\/strong> of Hawaii (2:13.35) downed\u00a0Kathy Treible<\/strong> of Florida (2:16.62) by 3.27 seconds in 1983.<\/p>\n

UMBC’s Emily Escobedo<\/strong> made history for her team as the first top-eight finisher in school history with a 2:06.43 for third.<\/p>\n

Stanford’s Sarah Haase<\/strong> (2:06.50), Texas A&M’s Bethany Galat<\/strong> (2:07.18), Georgia’s Annie Zhu<\/strong> (2:08.18), Texas A&M’s Esther Gonzalez Medina<\/strong> (2:08.49) and USC’s Kirsten Vose<\/strong> (2:10.42) also competed in the historic finale.<\/p>\n
