SYDNEY, Australia, October 7. TRIPLE Olympic medalist Andrew Lauterstein is the latest high profile swimmer who will link up with the New South Wales Institute of Sport International Training Program in Sydney, it was announced today.<\/p>\n
Lauterstein will join the elite NSWIS squad under coach Grant Stoelwinder in a joint partnership with the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre and Swimming NSW.<\/p>\n
The 22-year-old finished with bronze behind Michael Phelps in the controversial 100 meters butterfly final at the Beijing Olympics and played key roles in the silver medal winning 4x100m medley and 4x100m freestyle bronze medal winning relay.<\/p>\n
Lauterstein joins world record holders and fellow Beijing stars, Eamon Sullivan and Libby Trickett and rising stars Matthew Abood and Garth Kates in a squad that oozes talent.<\/p>\n
"It was a big decision to make but a decision I had to make for my future," said Lauterstein, who will be one of the keys to a very exciting Australian men's team. "My former coach Glen Baker has been amazing from my time an age grouper in Melbourne and the last three years at Southport on the Gold Coast. But I have outgrown the squad there and I enjoyed being in Grant Stoelwinder's group in Beijing and having the opportunity to train in the same lanes as Eamon and people like Mathew and Garth, who is also a top young butterflyer, will be great \u2013 I am really looking forward to it. With Libby also in the squad it really does give us a top line outfit and I'm sure it's going to be an exciting time for us all. Four years is a long time and you have to be settled in your own mind \u2013 and I am very comfortable with the decision I have made."<\/p>\n
Originally from Melbourne, the former champion schoolboy AFL player and baseballer, will spend his time off at home with his parents before moving to Sydney in the lead up to the October 27, Telstra Swimmer of the Year Awards before his November 7 induction into the SOPAC Path of Champions.<\/p>\n
NSWIS head coach Jim Fowlie said Lauterstein was one of the world's most exciting young male swimmers who will bring a touch of youthful exuberance to a program that is now really starting to take shape.<\/p>\n
